I'm not sure if it works on every document, but it worked on one of mine!
(Edit on 4/26) It works on some documents but not on others... Does anyone else have the same problem?

Someone in the comment section said "The latest word, as of today, is "The latest update in the bug is that there are still some approvals that the team is waiting on. The Word team is treating this as a high-priority incident and is working to have this restored as soon as possible.". So anyone wondering for any updates, there it is...

I've been having the same problem as well for a while. This is a paid subscription for 365. The version is 16.79.1.
Can someone help us? It seems a lot of people are being affected and nothing has been resolved.

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear it's working for some documents. However, the ongoing issue with the similarity checker seems persistent. Your questions about the December 9th message and the varying times of occurrence are valid concerns. Let's hope Microsoft provides updates soon. Kudos to their team for More info and addressing the bug. Fingers crossed for a swift resolution.
The similarity checker is STILL not working; why? This has been an issue for more than 30 days.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm a professor and I loved "similarity" when it was working.
