Left and right margins not aligned to the displayed text

The left and right margins/indents are correctly displayed. I expect that the text should get aligned to these. But, it is shifted towards right.

The file uses "mirror margin." The text on alternate pages are aligned correctly.

Actually, the horizontal ruler is fixed at its place. It should move left and right on alternate pages. This is not happening. Which setting is incorrect?

If you can spare a few minutes, please download a word template for paperback formatting, from amazon site:

    https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201834230

It is a zip file. Unzip it and select English version with trim size 6x9 inches (which I am using).

Check if all odd/even pages have correct margins displayed.

Please check on Word 2016, preferably. If not available with you, check on any version.

(It is a .docx document, not a template.)

    Image.

I am seeing the same thing from that document.

    Image.

This is in 365, Version 2309 updated a couple of days ago. (Windows 11)

This is on all odd-numbered pages, not just the first one. The ruler stays the same on the even- and odd-numbered pages.

(The paragraph formatting noted by the black squares is keep lines together, which should have nothing to do with this. The document is not in compatibility mode.)

Yes, you are correct it should not do this.

Note that many of the "updates" or "repairs" to the desktop application Word are shared in all versions of Word from 2016 on. They share much of the same code.

I am seeing the same thing as Charles in that specific file. This could be a damaged document or maybe a bug that affects Word documents with a custom paper format.

    It can be a bug.

But, what confuses me is, this being a recent problem. This was alright till sometime back. Therefore, I thought, it can be a setting issue.

This is occurring in a document created from the Normal template when in safe mode, as well.

    It is a bug.

    It is recent.

Sometimes in fixing one thing, Microsoft developers break something else. It is a very complex program. (Think Rube Goldberg!)
