Stop Office BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT prompt

I may have actually solved my own problem. In registry editor I searched for every occurrence of "One Drive" and "OneDrive" and maliciously deleted all but a few of them. I think there were more than a hundred. How does all that get into my registry? So far, no more annoying reminders in Word and Excel, which have become excellent tools.

My thanks to Microsoft for providing regedit, the tool that fixes the other tools. Now, if only they could do something about the second most horrible programming language ever created... Maybe discontinue it and replace it with a real programming language like FORTH, APL, ADA, or ATLAS....

After reading everything in this post and trying the Registry hack (that ended up failing), I did not feel like going through the Registry to remove every instance of OneDrive, so I thought that the best option was to uninstall OneDrive as I wasn't using it at all. This done, this most annoying prompt no longer nags me. Thus, my ancient version of Office 2016 is polluted no more and remains updated to the betterment of Outlook notification reliability.

Yeah, that process (search and destroy in the registry) is a bit extreme and definitely overkill for a problem that can be solved in a couple of minutes by just running the uninstall for OneDrive. But I can't judge too harshly, I sometimes get bogged down in the details myself 😭

Wow... 12 pages in and still seeing updates. You'd think by now this thread would get locked ... only for our benefit of course :)

I guess it says many see this 'undocumented feature' as less than undesirable.

Yet, apart from hacking the registry, no real solution offered. Certainly, none officially offered by MS.

I use OneDrive for all of it;s usefulness, just not for backing up my hard drive files.

And, obviously, I'm not alone ... so I'm left wondering why can't MS see that?

The answer MAY be this setting::

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive]"KFMBlockOptIn"=dword:00000001

A great bit of research on how to defeat this up-sell nag message, although it took me a while to work out that 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive' means 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\...' 🤦‍♂️I can find the node 'Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft' but nothing for OneDrive, so do you need to create the OneDriveNode key (node) then add the DWORD value as you show? I presume as we are talking about '1', hex v decimal makes no difference?

Will give it a go and see if I can 'rid myself of this turbulent nag message' 😊
