Stop Office BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT prompt

My experience (and feelings) are exactly the same as the OP.

I write software for a living so I (pretty much) know what I'm doing. I use Microsoft products all day every day and, in general, find them superior to other, similar, products. Having said that, things like this (which could easily be fixed) are annoying. Granted, this is a small deal but it suggests Microsoft doesn't care.

Certainly, Microsoft is top dog when it comes to business software but, it's uncanny how quickly that status can slip away. Does anyone remember Microsoft's phone/handheld offerings? Windows Mobile was indisputably the best and most capable system available. But Microsoft sat on their hands while Apple and Google took the entire market from them.

Couldn't happen with Office? Don't be so sure. Wake up Microsoft.

Anyone else here just because it drives them crazy to constantly see a message with a misspelling in a word processing program? If they could at least fix that, it wouldn't be so bad.

Thank you very much Scott-uu for you accurate and informative, albeit disappointing response! Especially the clarification that Microsoft, a software giant, corrupts the definitions for the most basic of computer actions, like "backup."

And thank you Mark8352 for sticking with the question and ignoring any non-answers.

I am furious with Microsoft in PUSHING their Onedrive nonesense. My wife somehow accidentally had her entire store of files tumbled up in a Onedrive invasion. It was a mess restoring her local drive because I found it to be glitchy with that mirror of backwards files. Broken mirror in my view.

I am sorry that I have no solutions, having hunted through settings and punched different options on both Win 10 and 11. I expect that it will take a software update. But will Microsoft management listen to feedback? (he asked rhetorically)

It is this sort of thing that is causing my entire family to move to Apple products, my wife and I are the only ones left.

Sorry to report, this doesn't correct the problem.

I added that key & value to the registry, and even rebooted.

The nag is still everpresent.

BTW, why the "" around the key? Just to be thorough, I've tried it both with and without the quote marks, with the same disappointing results.

The quotes are just how regedit export represents string values (the key name). I will add a snapshot of how it looks in regedit.

I have not had the nag appear since I added this (4 days now). I am running Win11 Pro, 22H2, and Office 365. OneDrive version shows as "Build 23.226.1031.0003".

OneDrive is not a backup, it’s a cloud location of your data.

The default installation of Office 365 and its OneDrive component uploads all the contents of the PC  \My Documents\ folders to OneDrive, (syncs) and there will be a OneDrive folder in File Explorer containing cached copy of all the OneDrive content. And in Word etc the default Save location is set to OneDrive.

No Docs/data is stored on the local PC
