Stop Office BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT prompt

Excel and Word keep displaying a banner when I open a file "BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT - Access this file anywhere with OneDrive included in your subscription"

I have a backup system I use that I like and I don't need OneDrive to backup my files. How do I get OneDrive/Office 365/Windows to stop giving me this prompt?

I click the "X" or Schedule Backup Later to make the banner go away, but it just comes back a little while later. I've opened up the OneDrive app from the system tray and unselected everything from the OneDrive backup, but none of this helps and the prompt keeps coming back.

How do I get this to stop?

    OK, I tried again.
    Double checked that the option was unticked - it was.
    Opened one file - no message - "great", I thought!
    Tried another file - and there's the message again.
    I even tried a complete reboot, just in case - no luck, still got the blasted backup to OneDrive message.

    FYI, I'm on Win 11 Home, all updates done, version 24H2, build 26100.3775

    Update: strange thing is, the message only appears on some Word documents (all of which are on my local drive). Consistently the case. Weird.

    I suggest you try it again. So far, it has worked perfectly for me.

    Perhaps there is a difference in our versions of Windows.

    I'm currently using Windows 11 Pro, Version 10.0.26100 Build 26100.

    Also Windows Update says I'm using Windows 11 version 24H2. Not sure what the relationship is between 24H2 and 26100.

    Completed. Will report back...

    Can now report, as other have, this didn't work. Backup to OneDrive is back. I think is is the longer scheduled job solution of live with constant upselling frm MS

    [...] I did not feel like going through the Registry to remove every instance of OneDrive, so I thought that the best option was to uninstall OneDrive as I wasn't using it at all. This done, this most annoying prompt no longer nags me.

    Yeah, that process (search and destroy in the registry) is a bit extreme and definitely overkill for a problem that can be solved in a couple of minutes by just running the uninstall for OneDrive. But I can't judge too harshly, I sometimes get bogged down in the details myself 😭
