Stop Office BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT prompt

Excel and Word keep displaying a banner when I open a file "BACKUP THIS DOCUMENT - Access this file anywhere with OneDrive included in your subscription"

I have a backup system I use that I like and I don't need OneDrive to backup my files. How do I get OneDrive/Office 365/Windows to stop giving me this prompt?

I click the "X" or Schedule Backup Later to make the banner go away, but it just comes back a little while later. I've opened up the OneDrive app from the system tray and unselected everything from the OneDrive backup, but none of this helps and the prompt keeps coming back.

How do I get this to stop?

    Just uninstall OneDrive and change Word/Excel settings to always put everything in local documents folder.

    I have done that on all PCs here, and don't miss OneDrive at all. The cloud storage is still there if I need to use it for sharing large files, etc.

    I don't think that MicroSoft knows this.

    It's irritating and very confusing, and ... I get the same question when closing a saved file and I do not have 365 but am using 2021 and don't have OneDrive activated as such

    I wonder what they'll come up with next

    I'm having the same issue. I want to use Excel, I really do, but this short of sh*t is the reason I will probably switch to Google sheets.

    Just let me save my file where I want to save it and not on your cloud.

    Even with the Backup options enabled, it still "nags". I have them all enabled (except for the "Desktop"), yet I still get the regular "nag" message.

    Maybe there is some other configuration or setting missing that I don't about, as it always shows "0 KB Backed up".

    EDIT: Maybe it is because I redirected all my OneDrive folders on to my local folders. In other words, my "Documents" is actually the "OneDrive/Documents", etc.

    I would say you're still getting the "nag" either because "Desktop" is not enabled, or because of the failure to sync.

    The failure to sync is an entirely different malfunction, so you should probably open a new topic for that to get help. It would take more investigation to determine why the sync is failing.

    The folder redirection you show is normal -- that is what happens when selecting the Onedrive "backup" option; the selected user folder locations (and their current content) are moved into the Onedrive folder, so they get synced as part of Onedrive.
