I too am having the same issue with excel files saved to our company SharePoint.

We are using shared reports from a sharepoint having the convenience of accessing these reports via browser. But a few days ago, certain users are having problems with these reports, because when they access them, they see gibberish rather than normal text. This does not happen when its opened on the desktop app, only when its opened on the browser.

I too am having the same issue with excel files saved to our company SharePoint.
None of these suggestions has helped.
Changing font, magnification level, double clicking on a single cell.
Alright fixed this! Cluck on the upper left cell so the whole workbook is highlighted. Then change the font (from airal to calibri, as example) tab out of the cell. It fixed it for me. Whew!
We have this issue too and we changed our fonts from Ariel and it looks fine now. It looks like encoding issue for Arial font.
After trial and error we came across this solution at my org.
Clear cache for all browsers and then restart computer.
From my and my peers testing you should find the doc restored.
