I am trying to delete a OneNote Notebook. I cannot seem to achieve it.

I have OneNote for Windows 10. Over the course of its life it is getting filled with Notebooks that I do not require. How can I delete them?

I am told: "To delete a OneNote notebook, do the following: Go to your OneDrive account and navigate to the notebook that you want to delete (it's likely stored in Files > Documents). Right-click the name of the notebook, and then select Delete."

This doesn't work because OneDrive is empty.

Alternatively I am told: "In File Explorer, navigate to your Documents (or My Documents) folder, and then double-click OneNote Notebooks."

This doesn't work because the OneNote folder in my Documents is empty.

I am out of options.

As I said: too much confusion.

This thread contains two different problems:

    1. How to delete a notebook

Taiwo's answer #3 is just wrong. You cannot delete a notebook in OneNote. You only can delete a notebook where it is stored.

Usually on OneDrive. Then you have to go to https://onedrive.live.com and delete it there.

    1. A notebook is closed and no more on OneDrive but appears in some notebook lists in OneNote, especially in Recent in OneNote or More Notebooks in OneNote for Windows 10. These notebooks are the so called Ghost notebooks.

    What is your problem ? 1 or 2 ?

This is a reply to Taiwo30, apologies for the delay.

Thank you for your attempted answer, but your items 2, 3 and 4 puzzle me.

    1. Right-click on the Notebook and select 'Close This Notebook' to close the Notebook
    2. Right-click on fhe Notebook again and select 'Delete' from the Context menu
    3. A confirmation message will appear. Click 'Delete to Permantly delete the Notebook.

I don't understand these instructions. If I have closed the Notebook then the only way I can get it baxk, is to go to 'More Notebooks' - then the Notebook I was trying to delete will reappear.

But from there, there is no way to delete it. Not least, there is no Context menu. If you can tell me how to get to the Context menu, maybe I can follow your instructions, but my impression is that I am using a different Windows - Windows 10 and a very old Office - or something else is different about your setup, because I cannot do what you ask.

I cannot either understand BerntP's solution. None of the categories quoted between his > signs appear in my OneNote, this seems to apply to something utterly different.

For example 'Recent' - what does this refer to? There is no recent category in my OneNote.

'Ghostnotebook' - there is no ghostnotebook category in my OneNote.

There is too much confusion in those earlier replies.

So what is exactly your "same issue" ?

What are the facts, what did you try ?

I have the same issue. I have spent 30 minutes on this, of my spare time. No luck. 30 minutes to delete a notebook, reading all the FAQs, trying all option. It's should be the most simple and basic thing to be able to delete something, yet....

Thank you so much for your reply, and apologies that it has taken me so long to revert to you. Unfortunately I failed on instruction 3 - in my OneNote for Windows 10, I cannot find a context menu
