Selecting a cell in Excel goes to an incorrect cell

1. Resizing the window, minimizing the window, change to another sheet and anything else that has to do with changing the current window fixes the problem.
2. This happens on all my machines where I work.
3. This happens on all different types of monitors
4. This happens using the touchpad and a wireless mouse, regardless of the manufacture

The problem is related the grid in the software. It just gets lost. I did notice something that ALL my machines do when this happens. The cell that is click selected is always higher (negative pixel location) than the cell that is actually clicked on.

For all of us that have this problem confirm that is the case for you as well?

• Resizing the Excel window has generally been the most reliable way of fixing this (for a couple minutes, until it pops up again), so I do think you are on to something with the 'grid' rendering.
• I do not think this has anything specifically to do with monitors (I am on a laptop, no external monitors 90% of the time, but I see it with and without external monitors)
• I do not think this has anything to do with touch pad gestures (as all of mine are disabled)...it also does not matter if using touch pad, or mouse.

This has been going on for quite some time. Fully agree with others frustration in MS support and help these days, but thanks Chris for jumping in.

I grew up, and live in Seattle, know a LOT of folks from/at MS. At one time, it was the top of the class for business software. Now, Enshittification is well entrenched in current MS and all of the '365' junk being put out these days...but Satya is making bank, so all good right?

Chris, what is the latest on this? Well over a year now, problems caused every single day. It's the most extraordinary situation, it's barely believable this still isn't fixed, have you got anywhere with it?

Most users report forcing the grid to redraw fixes the issue -- at least temporarily. So try resizing the window.

There could be a few issues here. We think that these problems are caused by some combination of Excel features that affect the grid layout, like freeze panes, grouping, or filtering, and hardware, like multiple monitor setups or trackpad gestures. Identifying consistent reproduceable examples in house to debug has unfortunately proved elusive.

This forum is interesting for community discussion, but it's not too helpful in trying to get to the bottom of a problem like this. Please submit feedback through Excel.

Feedback fails to post, error: "Something went wrong — try submitting again in a few minutes." Had to remove attachment, which isn't very helpful, for it to then submit.
