Selecting a cell in Excel goes to an incorrect cell

Issue reported multiple times for several years:

When selecting a cell in Excel, the cell selected is in a different location to where the user's cursor is. Issue leads to massive amount of lost productivity and causes serious errors in data.

Reported multiple times recently, no response from MS other than to report it to Feedback Hub (again).

The bug renders Excel totally unfit for purpose, for customers paying for it.

The bug should be fixed immediately, treated as high priority.

Steps already tried:

  • Regress Office version.
  • Rebuild laptop altogether.
  • Change laptop altogether.
  • Try Safe Mode.
  • Reset scaling to 100% on all monitors in use, and reboot.
  • General driver updates.
  • Try touchpad instead of mouse, change mouse.

    Has This been resolved? We are experiencing the same issue???

    No, into 2025 with same issue, it will be 2 years in March, for me. Previous Microsoft rep has totally abandoned communications, very obviously been told to back-out by Microsoft seniors.

    My employer will soon be giving me a third laptop to try; I'm amazed they tolerate this clear breach of consumer law by these this utterly vile, profiteering organisation.

    The issue continues to change my working life and cause me a great degree of stress. Microsoft - you should be utterly ashamed.

    Thanks for the thought, I've tried various scenarios (default is two external monitors plus laptop screen on) but nothing has resolved it.

    Microsoft - you should be thoroughly ashamed, this is the most disgusting service level.

    Chris,

    I have the same problem but I'm not using a touchpad mouse. Can you also verify when Excel "screws up calculating the offset..." Does it correct itself if you click into another sheet in the same workbook?

    At least we are getting somewhere with this as its been ongoing for a couple of years in my experience.

    Chris, any update?

    Today marks one whole year since I reported this to our I.T. team. A year of daily stress because a paid-for product is not fit for purpose.

    I really think this needs escalating to the highest possible authority. In terms of UK consumer law I very much doubt it is legal to continue charging for, and failing to fix, a known issue of this nature.

    Tom,

    I'll have to do more testing on NORMAL mode. I'm going to see if I can write a VB script to give me a "debugging window" to show me what is happening when I'm using Excel. If VB won't work, I'll switch over to C# and see if I can do it there. This issue happens so frequently that I'm starting to dread using Excel now but have no choice.

    I'll update you on if I get the script working and will send you over a copy to try it on your end. Maybe if we give Microsoft this data they will be able to better understand the issue and repair it.
