Text disappearing and reappearing while typing MS word

Hey All,

Running windows 11. ASUS m16.

Today a very weird quirk in word cropped up. As I'm typing, words that I've just typed will have random letters disappear and then reappear. When I delete something, sometimes the thing I just deleted will reappear on the document only to disappear when I'm typing elsewhere. No lag or anything happening, just randomly disappearing characters and reluctantly deleted words. Any idea if this is an issue related to a recent patch?

Cheers,

Nate

Enabling typing suggestions as suggested by MH524 on 23rd Feb 2023 seems to reduce, but not fully fix the issue for me. However, the suggestion popups are VERY distracting! Perhaps the suggestions popup causes a refresh of the image which clears the missing characters.

HOWEVER, I THINK I FOUND A FIX, based on this idea of "refreshing".

I found an article on techpowerup entitled "Graphical glitch in Word and Outlook (Office 365)".

I don't have GeForce Experience installed, but I do have Nvidia control panel, so I did the following things (I'm not sure that all of them are needed), but this is now fixed and working for me:

  1. In Nvidia control panel, I added Word and Outlook as separate programs to my "Manage 3D settings" under the "Program Settings" tab and for both I set the following:
  2. "Low latency mode" = Ultra.
  3. "power management mode = Nvidia recommended
  4. "preferred refresh rate = highest available.
  5. "vertical sync" = on

I restarted Word and Outlook and the disappearing characters are gone!

I'm also experiencing this. Doesn't happen in Word Pad, just Word. Not tried Outlook.

Try this experiment to see if it resolves the problem for you. In Windows 11 go to SETTINGS/TIME and LANGUAGE and select TYPING. Make the following changes if they are not already configured this way.

    1. Show text suggestions while typing on the physical keyboard Switch to ON
    2. Multilingual text suggestions Switch to OFF
    3. Autocorrect misspelled words Switch to ON
    4. Highlight misspelled words Switch to ON

The only one that I know for sure that affects the disappearing text in MS Word at least on my PC is item one. You will have to put up with text suggestions in your document while you’re typing at least until the problem gets further resolved by Microsoft, but the annoying disappearing/reappearing text has been tamed at least for the time being with this solution on my PC. Hope it helps! The Widow/Orphan control in paragraphs settings solution was helpful but entire typed conversations occasionally disappeared momentarily. The appearance of random text at the cursor seems to have gone the way of the Dodo with both of these solutions in my setup.

I tried this over the past few days, but the problem persists. The only setting I had change in my settings to match the settings you listed was #1. To me, it seems like the problem happens less often, but it still occurs.

I find the "show text suggestions" very annoying as it blocks you from selecting the word you just typed while the text suggestions are displayed.

Hopefully, MS addresses this widespread issue soon. If anyone is looking for an alternative, LibreOffice Writer and Google Docs both work and don't have this issue. At least not for me.

Sorry to hear that. I have been backtracking my troubleshooting and retesting over the last couple of days and the only other setting that I have made that may influence the behavior is in the Windows 11 Settings/Display/Graphics/Custom Options for Apps/(add Microsoft Word to the list and set to High Performance assuming you have a NAVIDIA graphics card).

As far as being able to select the word you just typed, if I understand you correctly, may be a setting in in MS Word options under Advanced Settings unless you are talking about being able to select one of the words in the suggestion box. Then the up arrow can be used to get in the suggestion box and the left/right arrows to select a word in the box and press enter to finish the selection. The mouse worked for selecting the text for me but using the mouse and keyboard slows things down a bit.

I am just glad to have a usable solution so I can get back to writing instead of paying attention to screen trash all of the time.  Good luck!
