Text disappearing and reappearing while typing MS word

Hey All,

Running windows 11. ASUS m16.

Today a very weird quirk in word cropped up. As I'm typing, words that I've just typed will have random letters disappear and then reappear. When I delete something, sometimes the thing I just deleted will reappear on the document only to disappear when I'm typing elsewhere. No lag or anything happening, just randomly disappearing characters and reluctantly deleted words. Any idea if this is an issue related to a recent patch?

Cheers,

Nate

Enabling typing suggestions as suggested by MH524 on 23rd Feb 2023 seems to reduce, but not fully fix the issue for me. However, the suggestion popups are VERY distracting! Perhaps the suggestions popup causes a refresh of the image which clears the missing characters.

HOWEVER, I THINK I FOUND A FIX, based on this idea of "refreshing".

I found an article on techpowerup entitled "Graphical glitch in Word and Outlook (Office 365)".

I don't have GeForce Experience installed, but I do have Nvidia control panel, so I did the following things (I'm not sure that all of them are needed), but this is now fixed and working for me:

  1. In Nvidia control panel, I added Word and Outlook as separate programs to my "Manage 3D settings" under the "Program Settings" tab and for both I set the following:
  2. "Low latency mode" = Ultra.
  3. "power management mode = Nvidia recommended
  4. "preferred refresh rate = highest available.
  5. "vertical sync" = on

I restarted Word and Outlook and the disappearing characters are gone!

Same problem with Word and Outlook. No idea what's the solution. RTX 4090 latest driver.

NVIDIA support is trying to help, we'll see how it goes.

Windows 11, Office 2019, Radeon 6900XT video card

Getting the same typing issues as others have mentioned in Word and Outlook.

Excel is fine and don’t really use Powerpoint so don’t know.

I think related to the comment about getting flashes of other things as the mouse moves.

I have noticed text and/or image substitution issues on mouseover of menu items on the ribbon bar and in settings, although even more frequently in settings. That is to say, when I mouseover an item the text from a previously mouseovered item will appear. The incorrect text remains as long as I keep the mouse still. This happens in Word, Outlook and Powerpoint but not Excel. I have included pictures of this.

In outlook when I move the mouse down the list of emails the one underneath the mouse pointer is supposed to highlight. Every second or third item doesn’t highlight and on the third one after that the highlight usually jumps back to a previously skipped entry for a brief instance.

I just recently updated my hardware and installed Windows 11. Using the same amd video card and office 2019 version as before and never had a problem under Windows 10.

I haven’t noticed this with any other apps that I use.

This image shows missing letter the word I was typing is scrap. It reappears when I finish typing the word and add a space after.

This image has correct text for option 'Keep track of formatting'

This image has incorrect text for the same option and instead displays the 'Enable click and type' text from another option lower down on the list.

Super valuable reply! The descriptions are exactly what I've been witnessing. I didn't know how to put my Outlook mouse-over issue into words, and this is perfect. I just now confirmed I have this issue on both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. One computer is all AMD and personally built, while the other is all Intel (edit: I meant to say Intel/Nvidia) and purchased from Dell. Both computers are Windows 11. Both are using Office 365 (one family license and one business license). I have "Try the new Outlook" off on both computers. The issue occurs both on a 1080p as well as 4k screen. As I am typing and testing, a black box appeared over the UI of Outlook for a very brief instant then disappeared. The mouse-over artifacts described above continue to occur.

I also have noticed where entire lines of text will graphically disappear only to reappear once you continue typing, scroll the document until the graphical glitch is off screen then return, or move the offending window. All three seem to resolve the glitch.

Let's stay on this! Microsoft needs to address it. With disappearing text as I type, it literally has a negative impact on productivity. At this point it's not an annoying visual but rather a work impeding bug.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm typing this entire reply in Chrome and have had zero graphical glitches with text on this computer (the Dell/Intel). I know for a fact I've experienced the issue in Chrome on YouTube while typing comments, so not sure why this web form works while the other doesn't (or possibly didn't).

The only things I can think to add at this time are...

I have dual 2K monitors, so between us 1080p, 2K and 4K monitors. These are same monitors I was using issue free with Office 2019 under windows 10.

I too have noticed entire lines disappearing and how to get them back same as you. Resizing the window with the maximize/resize, minimize buttons of the window also works.

Sometimes when I open an email in Outlook the entire body of the email is missing until I do the minimize/maximize thing. Moving focus to a different window and back sometimes works and sometimes just clicking the area containing the body of the email works.

Noticed that this thread was originally posted back in October of 2022 so the item is now six months old. Years back on an unrelated issue an ms mvp advised to create a new ticket to keep it current. Once past a certain age they attract less attention, at least that’s what was happening back then. I’m retired so for me just an extremely annoying bug. Will assist if I can.
