Text disappearing and reappearing while typing MS word

Hey All,

Running windows 11. ASUS m16.

Today a very weird quirk in word cropped up. As I'm typing, words that I've just typed will have random letters disappear and then reappear. When I delete something, sometimes the thing I just deleted will reappear on the document only to disappear when I'm typing elsewhere. No lag or anything happening, just randomly disappearing characters and reluctantly deleted words. Any idea if this is an issue related to a recent patch?

Cheers,

Nate

Enabling typing suggestions as suggested by MH524 on 23rd Feb 2023 seems to reduce, but not fully fix the issue for me. However, the suggestion popups are VERY distracting! Perhaps the suggestions popup causes a refresh of the image which clears the missing characters.

HOWEVER, I THINK I FOUND A FIX, based on this idea of "refreshing".

I found an article on techpowerup entitled "Graphical glitch in Word and Outlook (Office 365)".

I don't have GeForce Experience installed, but I do have Nvidia control panel, so I did the following things (I'm not sure that all of them are needed), but this is now fixed and working for me:

  1. In Nvidia control panel, I added Word and Outlook as separate programs to my "Manage 3D settings" under the "Program Settings" tab and for both I set the following:
  2. "Low latency mode" = Ultra.
  3. "power management mode = Nvidia recommended
  4. "preferred refresh rate = highest available.
  5. "vertical sync" = on

I restarted Word and Outlook and the disappearing characters are gone!

    Dear NJLR,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

I just tested from my side, and it seems that I cannot meet the same behaviour as like you described above.

In Word, Letters can seem to disappear in Word if you're typing in overtype mode or have a borderless text box covering text. Words can also disappear if you have field codesin a document.

If possible, could you please check below setting and verify the result with me.

1.Open Word, click File > Options>Click Advanced>Under Editing options, clear both the Use the Insert key to control overtype mode and the Use overtype mode check boxes.

2.Go into paragraph formatting (drop-down arrow) and try to turn off "Widow/Orphan control" for the Normal style.

Meanwhile, may I know does issue happened do specific Word document? If the issue only happens to a specific file, the file may be corrupted. In this scenario, please copy/paste content to a new created Word file, then to check the outcomes.

If the issue happens to all Word files including a new created one, the issue is more related to the Office app itself or your computer environment.

As the problem can be caused by different reason, I will appreciate you can try the normal troubleshooting steps 1 by 1 below and tell us the result.

    1. Make sure you’ve updated Office to the latest version that some issues can be resolved with such method.

If this situation disappeared in Safe Mode, then this issue could be caused by the incompatible add-ins, you can disable add-ins by this way: Open Word>add-ins>Disable add-ins. For reference: disable application add-ins and COM add-ins

    1. To check if this problem might be caused by the incompatible add, if possible, could you please try open your Word insafe mode which allow you to safely use it when it has encountered certain problems
    2. If still can’t work, please try torepair an Office application to fix the problem.

In the meantime, to confirm whether this is a bug in a specific version, please provide us the version information. To check version: Open Word>File>Account>Product Information and capture a full screenshot and share here and we will be tested on that version and verify the result with you.

Also, please confirm, whether other applications also get the same problem? Such as PowerPoint or Excel and etc. It will help for us to narrow down your problem.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad

I have the same problem. It occurs with both MS Word and Outlook. I am using Office 2021 (not 365) on Windows 11 on a brand-new Dell PC and this has been happening since day 1 with this setup. I'm a fast touch typist and it is disconcerting/confusing to see text just disappear from the screen and then reappear seconds later. If anyone has a solution, it would be very much appreciated!

A bit more info: I have dual monitors and the problem occurs on both of them; the monitors are connected to a dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti), not to the CPU graphics port; the problem does not occur when I switch my keyboard/mouse/monitors to my old Windows 10 / Office 2016 computer.

On the display it seems like the cursor jumps back to an earlier point, clearing what was typed after that, and then re-types it (while I'm typing away at a later point in the document).

Since you have a dual monitor setup, see if the problem still occurs if you temporarily remove one monitor.

I would suggest that you go to the manufacturer's web site and look for updated video drivers.
