OneDrive Mac - local files delete immediately instead of move to trash

21.245.1128.0002 (Standalone) (Apple Silicon or Intel) (Preview) on 2020 M1 MacBook Pro macOS Monterey 12.1

With the latest build, Cmd-Del / Move to Trash any item in OneDrive on my local HD results in "Are you sure you want to delete 'filename'? This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action."

This does not occur when deleting from any other location on my HD, where files move to the Trash normally.

I have checked & reset permissions on User and OneDrive folders, reset OneDrive, uninstalled & reinstalled OneDrive, rebuilt the .Trash directory, and more, all with no luck. Any ideas?

Hi FraserDon,

I go through the post carefully, I test on my side in OneDrive for Mac on Mac OS Monterey with latest version, and I can repro the same behaviour as you said and get a similar prompt. I am really sorry for the inconvenience this causes, as it seems that you are using Preview version of OneDrive, and would suggest you give feedback on the issue to the related developer team of OneDrive for Mac by select OneDrive icon>Send feedback. Your feedback will promote the related developer team of OneDrive to change the behaviour in OneDrive sync folder. Thanks for your efforts and understanding!

Additionally, though you may not find the deleted file from trash on Mac, you may find it from OneDrive recycle bin and you may restore it from here if you want. Check the link for more information on: Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive (microsoft.com)

    I'm on version 22.077.0410.0007 on my M1 MacBook Pro and still deleting files files instead of sending to trash. I believe this issue occurs because of where OneDrive is storing the files (in a System folder).

    Microsoft needs to change OneDrive and let us store the OneDrive folder where we choose like before. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

    Has anyone come up with a good alternative to OneDrive? I might start using iCloud instead and cancel my Microsoft subscription.

    Microsoft does dare to delete files right away ...

    Without Recycle Bin.

    Thats amazing.

    Cant even do cmd+z anymore.

    To improve the situation, microsoft decided to introduce the so much loved "are you sure" to delete popup windows.

    Looks like microsoft is trying to transform MacOS to Windows :P

    I agree 100% with this. Who is designing the UI for these things? Isn’t there anyone else in the developer’s office that looks at this and see that it’s confusing, ambiguous and it just plain sucks? This is an obvious case of a choice - it’s either one or the other, there’s an UI standard for this - a radio button.

    It really blows my mind that a company such as Microsoft lets amateurish stuff like this to be released. And then it stays like this FOREVER…

    Jesus, just pay me to look at software from an user perspective to find this sort of glaringly bad options and I can promise you better products. I just don’t get it…

    By the way, I’m in the latest version 22.099.0508.0001 (May 20, 2022) found here https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=861011, and the trash thing is happening here also, all files deleted from OneDrive disappear instead of going to the trash as they used to for years.

    OneDrive ran perfectly for years before this upgrade, and still does on my Catalina machine. On my iMac with Monterey, very high CPU utilization THE WHOLE TIME (my previously silent iMac is now an air conditioning machine),, always “Processing Changes” and login takes an eternity.

    I only still use this junk because I PAY for it with the Office 365 subscription, otherwise I’d be long gone after dealing with all this stuff for months now.
