OneDrive Mac - local files delete immediately instead of move to trash

21.245.1128.0002 (Standalone) (Apple Silicon or Intel) (Preview) on 2020 M1 MacBook Pro macOS Monterey 12.1

With the latest build, Cmd-Del / Move to Trash any item in OneDrive on my local HD results in "Are you sure you want to delete 'filename'? This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action."

This does not occur when deleting from any other location on my HD, where files move to the Trash normally.

I have checked & reset permissions on User and OneDrive folders, reset OneDrive, uninstalled & reinstalled OneDrive, rebuilt the .Trash directory, and more, all with no luck. Any ideas?

Hi FraserDon,

I go through the post carefully, I test on my side in OneDrive for Mac on Mac OS Monterey with latest version, and I can repro the same behaviour as you said and get a similar prompt. I am really sorry for the inconvenience this causes, as it seems that you are using Preview version of OneDrive, and would suggest you give feedback on the issue to the related developer team of OneDrive for Mac by select OneDrive icon>Send feedback. Your feedback will promote the related developer team of OneDrive to change the behaviour in OneDrive sync folder. Thanks for your efforts and understanding!

Additionally, though you may not find the deleted file from trash on Mac, you may find it from OneDrive recycle bin and you may restore it from here if you want. Check the link for more information on: Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive (microsoft.com)

    This is definitely a sticking point for sure. I want to consolidate on a single platform (Microsoft 365) since I use the Office products and as I am paying a Subscription, it makes sense to utilize OneDrive. But the entire "Delete" functionality is cumbersome. I want a way to quick delete the files without getting prompted all the time. I don't much care about the losing the file as I want to permanently delete it, but I don't want to be asked/prompted for it all the time requiring a trackpad click. It is a time easier.

    I just want a quick way to move the file to trash and then I will empty.

    The problem is present in my case too, yesterday my file manager warned me that the file will be permanently removed.

    It seems that the development of OneDrive is in an experimental phase, conducting experiments on a large number of users. First, all my files were moved to a different location, removing 200 GB of files to ONLY CLOUD space... then OneDrive became extremely slow (signing being the slowest process) with CPU jumping to 100% from time to time... The only reason I am using OneDrive is because of my Office 365 subscription. The way OneDrive currently works on macOS would never motivate me to purchase OneDrive storage alone. For example, I don't keep OneDrive active all the time, but run it at the end of my day or when leaving my home.

    It still this way. this seems to be the "Improved" way apple is doing with cloud storage.

    since this move, i have files that i dont have permissions to anymore and cant access them.

    I've go so far as to set them to everyone:everyone and that didnt fix the issue.

    Hi

    Im having the same issue.

    Microsoft recently update onedrive to be native on apple silicon but the update has been full of bugs so far.

    When I delete files they are removed completely from my hard drive. What is worst is in some instances the files are nowhere to be found in the trash bin of onedrive web servers.

    Im using OneDrive version 22.055.0313 and MacOs 12.3.1

    OneDrive was a reliable software for years long but im highly consedering looking for another service due to recent updates and failures.
