OneDrive Mac - local files delete immediately instead of move to trash

21.245.1128.0002 (Standalone) (Apple Silicon or Intel) (Preview) on 2020 M1 MacBook Pro macOS Monterey 12.1

With the latest build, Cmd-Del / Move to Trash any item in OneDrive on my local HD results in "Are you sure you want to delete 'filename'? This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action."

This does not occur when deleting from any other location on my HD, where files move to the Trash normally.

I have checked & reset permissions on User and OneDrive folders, reset OneDrive, uninstalled & reinstalled OneDrive, rebuilt the .Trash directory, and more, all with no luck. Any ideas?

Hi FraserDon,

I go through the post carefully, I test on my side in OneDrive for Mac on Mac OS Monterey with latest version, and I can repro the same behaviour as you said and get a similar prompt. I am really sorry for the inconvenience this causes, as it seems that you are using Preview version of OneDrive, and would suggest you give feedback on the issue to the related developer team of OneDrive for Mac by select OneDrive icon>Send feedback. Your feedback will promote the related developer team of OneDrive to change the behaviour in OneDrive sync folder. Thanks for your efforts and understanding!

Additionally, though you may not find the deleted file from trash on Mac, you may find it from OneDrive recycle bin and you may restore it from here if you want. Check the link for more information on: Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive (microsoft.com)

Best Regards,

Clark

This is definitely a sticking point for sure. I want to consolidate on a single platform (Microsoft 365) since I use the Office products and as I am paying a Subscription, it makes sense to utilize OneDrive. But the entire "Delete" functionality is cumbersome. I want a way to quick delete the files without getting prompted all the time. I don't much care about the losing the file as I want to permanently delete it, but I don't want to be asked/prompted for it all the time requiring a trackpad click. It is a time easier.

I just want a quick way to move the file to trash and then I will empty.

    Paul

    Hi

    Im having the same issue.

Microsoft recently update onedrive to be native on apple silicon but the update has been full of bugs so far.

When I delete files they are removed completely from my hard drive. What is worst is in some instances the files are nowhere to be found in the trash bin of onedrive web servers.

Im using OneDrive version 22.055.0313 and MacOs 12.3.1

OneDrive was a reliable software for years long but im highly consedering looking for another service due to recent updates and failures.

Hi, I have the exact same problem as well on my 2020 iMac. Worst, it seem that the version I downloaded from MS (22.022.0130.0001) and the version in Apple Store (22.022.0130.0002) are different. After upgrading to Monterey, I noticed that my OneDrive files where moved as mentioned to Mac OS CloudContainer he library folder. Despite clicking on the OneDrive option to keep the files locally, they were only partially downloaded.

I uninstalled OneDrive, downloaded the version from MS website (I thought they were the same but they are not) and found out that I could not configure the new install. I got the error message

“Account already connected, a different version of the OneDrive app is already connected to this account”.

I uninstalled OneDrive, cleaned up the leftover and reinstall the downloaded version. This time I was able to configure OneDrive and select “Always keep on this device”, which downloaded my files locally without any problems. Everything was good… until updated Mac OS Monterey with the new patch. Back to square one. All my local files were deleted and the Apple Store version was somehow running in the background, partially downloading the files into the CloudContainer folder.

This is a total mess. The worst part is …. I have 2017 MacBook Pro, with version 21.245.1128.002 and everything run smoothly. I upgraded to Monterey and no problems at all. I have not upgraded to the latest OS patch though and won’t until my problem on the iMac is solved. I also have not upgraded the OneDrive version on my MacBook Pro.

Mac OS X quality has been going down for years now and I am seriously contemplating moving to Windows 11, which I also have worked with.

It doesn't' really matter if it's an Apple or Microsoft issues. All I know my files were going to my local recycle bin up until the last OneDrive update.

I sometimes delete many zip files after unzipping and then find that I need some back. I don't want to and shouldn't have to go to the web to do this. Plus I just noticed that the web version it missing the last 3 days (oldest file is 2/4/22 and it's now 4/7/22) of the files I deleted.

OneDrive should let you store your OD folder where you'd like (like it did before).
