Just got this as part of my support case, looks like it should be OK now.

There was service degradation: OP283538

More info: Impact was specific to all versions of Microsoft OneNote excluding OneNote 2016 and web client. Windows 10 desktop client, iOS and Android mobile app versions were all impacted.

Final status: We've confirmed that a recent deployment intended to provide optimizations for service stability inadvertently introduced a regression in service logic, resulting in impact. We've reverted the affecting change and confirmed that impact is mitigated.

Start time: Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at 5:30 PM UTC

End time: Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 7:00 PM UTC

Root cause: A recent deployment intended to provide optimizations for service stability inadvertently introduced a regression in service logic, resulting in impact.

The service is restored now.

I can chime in on this one. I've got 2-3 staff with the same issue, same error message on Windows 10 machines. We're using OneNote for Windows 10 via the MS Store.

I've tried adding the notebook via different methods, repair/reset/remove and reinstall of OneNote for Win 10 and manually deleting the package files to no avail. Using the same account on another machine seems to work short term but then it too has the same problem.

The staff member I was testing with had a large number of Notebooks open as well, but since we needed to try get it working she was happy for me to remove it all and start again.

I've seen similar threads popping up around the internet from the last couple days, so something must have changed in the last few days to have triggered it. I've logged this with MS on my end directly to see what they can come up with.

Same here, I work for a college as a teacher. I use OneNote for windows 10 from the MS store and giving me the same errors. Have tried reinstalling etc to no avail. Online version seems to sync okay but not really ideal as missing so many features I use daily.

Have not really had any sync issues in the last year, so something has definitely changed at MS's end; and likewise I have seen lots of help threads created here and on reddit etc in last 2 days. Hope they fix it quick! I wonder if it could have even been caused by the start of school term

I've been suffering with this for > 24 hours now – just had a very pleasant web chat with a really decent dude at MS Support, who says it's "an emerging issue with the OneNote sync system"; that a lot of folk are complaining about it now; that they're aware of it, and that they're working to fix it. I get the impression it won't be the swiftest of processes!

Just keep hitting "sync this notebook" repeatedly on each problem notebook worked on the Mac. Generally it took about 5 goes on each notebook. This explains the randomness I had before in that some would eventually sync.

So to recap - with the list of notebooks in the left pane, I right click and select "sync this notebook" repeatedly at 2-3 second intervals until it changed from the triangle warning sign to the circular arrows showing it is syncing. When it is complete I get the cloud and tick in the top right indicating it is now good. Clicking on the error message top right previously repeatedly did not work, but maybe I didn't do it enough times.

All the indications were that it was syncing content as I could modify with tablet or phone and see changes within a few seconds on the Mac. My suspicion is that the problem is in the way it flags that it is properly synced. Closing and reopening a notebook didn't fix it.

    Hi All,

The issue should be resolved now. (in my testing it appears to be)

Here is what Microsoft Support had to say

Regarding the case, the issue was due to service interruption TM283251 which is already resolved. so please check and confirm if still issue is observed or not. Please find below details of the same. Title: Users may intermittently been unable to sign-in, view organization charts, send messages, and view files

User Impact: Users may have intermittently been unable to sign-in, view organization charts, send messages, and view files.

More info: Any cached data may have intermittently been affected, such as user presence and organization charts. Users may have also intermittently been unable to add/remove users to teams and channels and sync OneNote with Microsoft Teams. *Final status: We've finished reverting the configuration change and confirmed via telemetry that service is restored.Scope of impact: This issue intermittently affected users attempting to sign-in, view organization charts, send messages, and view files.Start time: Monday, September 6, 2021, at 1:56 AM UTCEnd time: Monday, September 6, 2021, at 4:40 AM UTC**Root cause: A configuration change for regulating requests inadvertently encountered issues, resulting in impact.*This is the final update for the event.

Hope this helps some of you.
