Cursor jumps to the end of the document when deleting a line in Word and have Track Changes enabled (Word for Windows)

I work as a professional editor and this has been an issue now for about a month. It is extremely irritating when working on a long document. (It's been happening to other colleagues too. Your ears have probably been burning!)

It happens on many Word documents, whether I create them myself or receive them from others. When tracked changes is on and I want to edit the last line in a paragraph, the cursor jumps down to the end of the document. When I go back to the paragraph I was editing, the line I had been working on has disappeared. To see it again, I have to toggle between All Markup and Simple Markup.

It's random, in that it doesn't happen at the end of every paragraph.

It's a bug in Word and it needs to get sorted out.

I'm working in Word (Office 365 subscription) on a Windows 10 PC (up to date). My Microsoft 365 Apps for business build is 16.0.13801.20360 and seems to have been last updated on 22 March 2021 (UK).

I am experiencing exactly the same problems as AverillBuchanan. A fix would be much appreciated. It is very, very annoying!

I'm and editor, and I've been having this issue, too. It is SOOO frustrating, and it's literally costing me money because it takes me so much longer to edit a manuscript now. 

Here's what I've been doing, and it helps, somewhat. 

I have to use track changes, but I like to work with 'no markup' so I can just read and edit, without the distraction of editing marks. But that view seems to make this issue horrible. So, I've been using 'All Markup,' but because it's customizable visa the dropdown menu, I hide all the changes. 

This reduced the number of times that it happens, but it still happens, unfortunately. 

This is obviously a track changes bug because I've tried everything to eliminate the issue. It happens in doc files and docx files. Sometimes, my paragraphs disappear, too. Or sometimes, I see double paragraphs where one paragraph is not indented but the next one is. When that happens, I save, close it out, and reopen the document, but again, it's time consuming. Time is Money, so this is horrible. I'm hoping Microsoft moderators are reading these forums and find a hotfix soon.

I don't know if it only happens with one of those views. I only work in 'Simple Markup' and rarely work in 'All Markup' (it's much too cluttered to work in). It could just be the toggling between the two that 'resets' the document in some way. In any case, it's only started to happen inside the last 4-6 weeks. It's never done that before, in the 15 years I've been using Word.

Another part of the problem happens when I try to join two paragraphs together using the delete key. The cursor not only jumps to the end of the document, but if I press undo (in an attempt to get a work around solution), the second paragraph disappears.

So, I have to undo twice to get back to safe ground.

I've been wrestling with this for months as well, and I've only now found this forum that is discussing it. I thought I was going crazy. I've even done a complete uninstall and reinstall of Windows 365, but it's changed nothing. This isn't just costing me money and wasted effort—it's destroying my confidence as a professional editor. I no longer have control over the document. I have zero confidence I'm not actually introducing errors at this point.

It is beyond belief that something like this could happen this far down the road in an application's existence. Stop making "improvements" that introduce horrible glitches that make the app almost unusable.

Are you trying to force everyone to Google Docs?

ETA: I am actually using Microsoft 365 for Mac, and I thought that was the problem. Apparently it is the same for Word users in both environments.
