External Data Refresh Failed

Had no problems on an existing spreadsheet for months.  I am pulling in stock quotes.  Today I started getting this message:

External Data Refresh Failed  "We refreshed some of your data, but we couldn't refresh all of it because we changed or removed it on our side.  For data we can no longer refresh, we've kept the most recent results.

How do I fix it and how do I identify the cells that are not refreshing?

Thank you!

Sorry you are having this problem too. As you can see from the thread length and limited responses from Microsoft, they really don't care and seem to have little or no interest in fixing it. The customer service group responsible for this are a bunch of do nothing, don't care clowns. Hope you find an fix and can share it with us.

    Hi all,

I too was getting very frustrated about this message without any obvious stock data not being refreshed.

I see there's still no good fix from Microsoft, and like another user I don't feel like rebuilding my stocks spreadsheet.

So as a workaround, I created macro buttons to refresh and sort my sheets etc, with the error message exited automatically through the macro. Obviously not ideal but it was a workaround I'm happy with at the moment.

    Cheers

    Hi JohnKendig1 and FranNelbach,

Thank you for sharing your experience here.

Based on your description, it seems that this issue occurs on specific fields and you cannot identify which data is updated and which is stale.

If so, we have tested it again on our side, and comparing with UTC time, there is no much difference, as shown below:

Given this situation, on the one hand, since the stock data is provided and updated from the third-party Refinitiv, and this issue only occurs on specific fields, to address your concern about the situation, we’d suggest you report this issue to our related team by clicking Excel > File > Feedback. This feedback will directly go to them so that our related team can hear your voice on this feature directly.

On the other hand, this issue may be also related to third-party Refinitiv, due to the limited resource on our side, this issue may need to be checked from background. The best way to troubleshoot the issue is to report the issue to the related Team. So we suggest you contact the administrators in your organizations and open a support ticket in the Office 365 admin center via the steps in the articlefor further help. The support team there has the correct escalation channel for this case. This is also the most efficient way in handling this kind of issue.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hi JohnKendig1,

We appreciate that you posted back and shared the details with us. We’re sorry for the late reply due to the weekend.

We have read your description carefully, and it seems that you just created a workbook with several worksheets, and you pulled data from Stocks, and you linked the data to the other worksheets.

At the same time, this issue occurs intermittently.

If my understanding is right, we have tested again on our side with Excel, we just used Stocks to get data, then we linked the data to another worksheets, and it works fine.

Given this situation, we’d suggest you create a new workbook to check if the same problem will occur, if the same problem still persists after creating new workbook, this issue may be related to Excel client, we’d give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. We’d suggest you refer to this article: Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps to achieve the latest version of Office. Then you can update your Office to the latest version to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. You can open your Excel in safe mode to check if the same problem will occur. It will help in identifying an add-in or extension that may be causing a problem on startup. As steps shown below: Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run.> In the Run box, type one of the command: excel**/safe**
    3. You can use Online Repair to fix the Office application. Repair an Office application.

If the same problem still persists after trying the suggestions above, to narrow down this issue, could you provide the information below?

    1. Could you provide the Product Information and version of your Excel? You can go to Excel > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it. As shown above.
    2. Do all files have the same problem? You can create a new workbook to check if the same problem will occur.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hi JohnKendig1,

Thank you for querying in this forum. We do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. And we will try our best to help you.

According to your description, it seems that you have an spreadsheet and linked to external data, and it worked before, however, now it refreshed failed and encountered an error message.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, we have tested it on our side, we just created two workbooks and linked the data from one workbook to another workbook, and it refreshed data without any problem.

May I know if the steps above are consistent with yours? If not, could you provide the detailed steps about how you linked to external data?

At the same time, to better understand your situation and provide specific suggestions, could you provide the information below?

    1. Could you provide the screenshot of error message?
    2. Could you provide the Product information and version of your Excel? You can go to Excel > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it.
    3. May I know if you linked external data from another workbook or stock quotes from web page?
    4. May I know if all files have the same problem? You can create a new Excel file to check if the same problem will occur.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
