Word templates not opening as new documents

This happened after a recent Windows update.

I've seen this issue written about and have tried the suggested solutions without luck.  First tried quick repair and then full reinstall of office 365. Also set related registry entries to "new."

All templates are just opening as .dotm instead of .docm or .docx.  Any other troubleshooting steps available?

    How are you using the templates?

    If you use File > New and pick a template, Word will create a new document based on the template.

    File New Variations in the Versions of Word

    Are these templates in a SharePoint library?

    If you right-click on a template's icon what do you see?

    Is New the default? Is it available?

    How were these "templates" created? 

    Were they created in Word and saved, in Word, as templates?

    Or, did some other program create them and attach a .dotm suffix? Given the path, I suspect the latter.

    Try opening  a problem .dotm in Word and using SaveAs to save as a template with the same name in the same location. Any difference after you do this?

    Why are all of these .dotm templates? Do you really need them macro-enabled?

    Hi and thanks for helping.  This has been a huge problem.

    Working backwards...

    All templates have VB code linking them to a local Access DB.  dotm docm is mandatory

    This only affects 1 computer, but it is my work laptop.  I am a doctor and enter patient data by laptop.

    "Save as" a template (overwriting) does not change.  Icons are not correct for dotm.  They look generic.  docm icons are correct.

    dotms were created in Word by the standard method and successfully used for several years.  A Windows or Word update broke their function.

    Sharepoint is not used.

    "New" is no longer an option for dotms.  Only "edit" since this problem began.

    I cannot pick one of my personal templates this way. Under "New" there is only a blank document and below online templates.  If I click File\Open then the template opens as a template
