This happened after a recent Windows update.
I've seen this issue written about and have tried the suggested solutions without luck. First tried quick repair and then full reinstall of office 365. Also set related registry entries to "new."
All templates are just opening as .dotm instead of .docm or .docx. Any other troubleshooting steps available?

Can you show us a screen shot of the dialog that appears when you right click on a Word Template.
No change.
I ran winword.exe /r
and
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\winword.exe" /r
Neither resulted in any notification and nothing changed.
Okay that's a new possibility. My fingers are crossed
