I've lost the ability to edit Word documents in Teams.  Is there anything I can do to fix that?

Hi All

Thanks for all the feedback here.

We would like to inform that this change is just a temporary adjustment due to the COVIN-19.

You can get more information or keep track of this change in the message center:

To open the Message center, first, make sure that you have selected the Try the new admin center toggle on the admin center Home page, and then go to Health > Message center to check the post (MC 207443).

We will continue to monitor our Microsoft 365 services on an ongoing basis and share any further updates here.

Meanwhile, only the Office 365 Education license is affected by this change, if you are working with a different license but still have the same issue, or there is any other issue when using Teams or edit document online due to this change, we suggest you post a new thread on our community and we will keep working for you.

We highly appreciate your understanding. Please do take care during this specific period.

Best Regards

Higgins

    Hi Higgins,

Can you explain why this feature has been removed?

We, as a University, found it a particularly useful feature to be able to open and edit Word documents inside Teams - of particular usefulness, was the ability to have an inline chat with other editors.

I don't understand why you'd pull the plug on this great product feature...

Why only pull the feature for Word, you can still edit xls and ppt files in Teams...completely non-nonsensical to me!

    Regards,

    Keith Aitchison

I totally agree with everyone saying this was a bad move. It seems a bit ridiculous to make a change that no one that has been using the product requested.

You are welcome! Let's hope they bring it back, not sure what was the intention behind removing the feature in the first place.

As Microsoft said in the begining of their statement... "these unprecedented times" (Covid-19), I'm pretty shure Microsoft want to move loads from the Teams service and on to SharePoint when it comes to editing Word documents. I know some of the Office 365 services has increased by 600% the last two weeks. As long the Covid-19 virus is around... I'll bet this is the way it is.
