Error message when opening word doc: "Not Implemented" (Word for Windows)

I have the same issue described by Kurt. One thing that I haven't yet seen on this thread that may be insightful for debugging purposes is that - when I encounter the error, I can select right.click > Restart on Windows Explorer in the Task Manager, and that restores functionality (i.e. I can open files normally, and no longer see the error) for some brief period of time. Whatever is resetting there is likely the same thing that is resetting when Kurt restarts his computer.

To me, that says that there is some sort of connection between OneDrive and Windows Explorer itself that gets modified (whether by the passage of time, or saving of new documents).

@Doug Robbins - does that reveal anything that might help us think though a solution here?

This whole thing is very frustrating indeed....

One other thing that might be of interest: so far as I can determine, it's only Office suite applications: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.  Other apps (.pdf, video and picture files), no problem.

I just spent 40 minutes reading all these post, and doing all the steps to include repair.   Nothing works other that restarting the computer and then after an hour or so., it doesn't work again.  I get the error code "not implemented."  The only way I can open a document is by opening word, and then "File" -> "open" and boom.  This is so inconvenient.  Too many people are complaining about the same thing... I don't think this is a computer problem, or a user problem, this is definitely a software problem.  Please fix it Microsoft!! This isn't good.

4. All documents will open with the Open command from the inside word, but they open with 'Compatability Mode', even with documents that have been created with this version of Word. This is very inefficient for her because she works with documents all day long.

"Compatibility mode" just means that the file format hasn't been updated to match the settings of the Word version in which you are editing the document. This may happen if the document was originally based on an existing document (which is also in compatiblity mode), or if the document was based on a template which is in compatibility mode of course.

If you create a new blank document (Ctrl+N) and save it, does that document display in compatibility mode? If it does, your Normal template is an older version.

The doc is on my local PC. 

I can open Word to create new docs as well.

After opening in Safe Mode and following your procedure, the only things listed on that list are:

Acrobat PDFMaker Office Com Addin

SMART Ink-Word-All

Also, the problem seems to have stopped for now, and I can open documents through the appropriate folder. However, this is not the first time this has happened recently, so any help avoiding this in the future would be appreciated as well.
