PowerPoint 2016 exported mp4 video "jerks" on some slide transitions

I am using PowerPoint 2016 - Windows 7. When I export to an mp4 video, I notice that at some slide transitions the video "jerks" (quickly flashes back and forth from previous slide). I am at a total loss as to why. I'm hoping this is something I am doing wrong and someone can help figure out how to prevent this from happening.

where it jerks: 55 seconds, 1:45, and 2:36

The same behavior occurs in original mp4 file exported from ppt. If you download the mp4 file and run in Windows Media Player you will see the glitches at the time points. For some reason, when I just run the mp4 in a browser, the jerks do not show up, I guess are "smoothed over" by whatever video player the browser is using.

You will notice there is kind of a pattern. Approximately 50 seconds between the glitches. I have noticed a more or less similar pattern, approximately one minute between the glitches, in some other tests I have done.

I also see this happen when I remove the slide timings and set the mp4 video export to advance slides every 5 seconds. In that case, the jerks happen exactly at 1 minute and 2 minutes.

The transition "jerk" never happens when I run a slideshow from within PPT. Only happens in exported mp4 video.

Slide transitions set to "none".

Any help appreciated. Please let me know if additional information needed.

If a bug in ppt, any suggested workaround?

I too have this issue. The exported MP4 from O365 PP 2016 is experiencing the same "glitch" on transitions. After the transition completes, the previous slide pops up, sometimes the entire slide, sometimes only parts of it.

I've been using PP for this purpose for many years and never had this issue, even with Win 10 x64 and O365 2016 until recently. I'm suspecting it has something to do with one or more of the updates pushed out by Microsoft. (remember the debacle where the Win 10 update 1809 would delete your user profiles if you didn't store them in a "traditional" location?)

Anyway, in October this was working fine for me (we are a corporate entity that updates much slower than public users).

I've had to resort to two rounds of encoding making the process more lengthy.

Length of video is irrelevant unless of course it's shorter than the 55 seconds (yes mine also initially happens at 55 seconds go figure)

I am a software engineer and I can tell you that this is most definitely an encoding problem. It is NOT a player problem ... I suspect that the encoding is screwed up and some players more readily ignore them. But what do I know, I only design and write software for a living.

    Thanks for replying. But the problem also occurs when the mp4 file is played by Windows Media Player, as clearly stated in the original post, so it does not "play OK with other softwares than VLC". Others have confirmed what I said about WMP, if you read the thread. You can download the video from the original post and confirm with WMP yourself. So the idea that VLC is malfunctioning is not true. The mp4 file from PPT 2016 running under Windows 7 has artifacts at certain slide transitions, making an awful "jerk" back to previous slide and then back forward. Media players may display the very quick "jerk" better or worse. If the media player displays fewer frames, the jerk may not even be seen. But the jerk is in the mp4 file, so to talk about "hiccup between PPT and VLC" is nonsense, to my knowledge. Correct me if I am wrong, but VLC does not care where the mp4 file came from. It's just an mp4 file. Please do not take my statement of facts the wrong way, I do appreciate your reply and the confirmation there is a problem. Again, dear moderator, could you please close this thread, which you were originally very eager to do, as the thread is not adding new useful information at this point. Thanks

    Thanks. I'm glad you found a solution. However, I would point out you are using different PPT and OS versions - Office 365 on Windows 10 - so does not really apply to the original question. Similarly, while I have also encountered audio glitches on exporting to video, the original post was about a visual effect - the "jerks" on some slide transitions. I tried to apply your solution, but unfortunately, PPT 2016 menu system does not have "File / Info / Optimize Media Compatibility" option. I looked pretty carefully. But if I am missing it and someone else sees the menu option on PPT 2016, let me know.  As previously detailed, I found alternative methods to accomplish needed tasks, figured out how to use the great parts of PPT and work around the frustrating glitches. I am reluctant to click on "Mark as Answer", because no answer so far to the original issue. Again, dear moderator, I would like to close the thread. Thanks

    Thanks. I agree with everything you say except "reply of mine is not adding any value". :) To me, your reply has lots of value. I also found things frustrating, but as you did, found alternative methods to accomplish needed tasks, figured out how to use the great parts of PPT and work around some of the surprising glitches. Again, dear moderator, unless some novel idea is proposed to change the current conclusion, the conclusion stated in my previous post, I would like to close the thread on August 6th.
