Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

    Hi everyone,

    I was finally able to get my CPU usage back to normal again.  I have Office 2016 Professional and had the same problem after updating to version 2005 (Build 12827.20268). Stopping click-to-run and clearing cache didn't work so  I kept rolling back versions of Office until I got to Version 2003 (Build 12624.20466) and still that didn't help usage was up to 10% on click-to-run and 10% for every office app opened: Outlook 10%, Access 10% and Word 10% I was up to 40%+ usage.  Repair office didn't help either.  So as a last resort I decided to do a repair on Windows 10 That worked for me.  I've been running at less then 3% CPU usage on Click-To-Run with Access opened for over 24 hours now .  Repair doesn't delete any apps, or user data, I just assume it re installs the system files.  Anyway it worked for me, it might be worth trying.  Here's the link I used to read about repair explain how to use it.

    Thanks for the note on the Windows 10 repair. I'll keep that in mind in case an update does not resolve the problem.

    After your reply I did run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow). I was surprised that it found and repaired corrupt files. It was run several weeks ago with no problem. Unfortunately, the high CPU activity remains.

    I also ran chkdsk and no problems were reported.
