Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

    There was no folder "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw", so I cleared another one, but that didn't help. I rolled the app two releases back, that didn't help either.

    I uninstalled Office completely and installed with a stand-alone installer from the site, getting version 2002, and forbade it to update.

    Now, that helped. I'll wait like this until the fix is released.

    Thanks all for the help. This does appear to be a problem with Version 2005 Build 12827.20268. Let's hope the problem is fixed soon in another update.

    It doesn't look like I need to set Metered Connection so I have an easy solution for the present. My computer actually sounded different after the update and I suspect that the CPU fan was speeding up as a result of the additional CPU activity and heat.

    vvshorikov - I checked the thread you referenced which is quite interesting. It appears that users are seeing a variety of different symptoms.

    EliseM - thanks for passing along the additional information. The folder names are not the same in Office 2019 so it's not clear if deleting specific files might help.

    Not working. Uninstalling Office and switching to open office for now. Microsoft users need to be very careful going forward before the upgrade. Not sure when it will be fixed.  Seems like we are used as alpha testers.  Biggest lessons learned. Fortunately, I don't have anything critical tomorrow.
