Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

There is something else worth noting in the thread that I posted. A link that was posted by a user takes you to this thread.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_install-mso_win10-mso_o365b/office-365-for-enterprise-after-update-issue/235afcbc-e226-428c-a007-a4e00d991581?tm=1592079519208&auth=1

Note the response from the Microsoft Agent on subscribing to the primary thread where the latest information will be posted. They acknowledge multiple reports of the problem but I suspect they have not seen all the related threads including this one. There is also a comment about Click-to-Run and an effort to involve more resources.

It was interesting that two different Microsoft Agents were posting in the primary thread. I hadn't thought about it before but the current situation must complicate software development with people working from home.

I also noticed the request to submit Feedback from the Office Client. That is good news and hopefully they take notice when many users report the same problem. I'll plan to use that feature in the future. I did like the acknowledgement that is received after submitting feedback through the Office Client.

I followed your link and read the agent's comment.  I noticed that they also said to send feedback to the Office agents as well, I already did that too.  Still think it has something to do with rebooting PC.  I had metered connection turned off for a few days, but after restarting my PC a couple of time for software & driver updates, my PC is always on, the problem came back.  I'm just going to wait it out I guess, until Microsoft decides to listen to us and correct the problem with another "Latest and Greatest" Update.

I submitted Feedback earlier today through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub and the Office Application. The Feedback Hub had a recent entry mentioning Click-to-Run (SxS) and High CPU. I added a comment which also triggers an Upvote.

There are at least six threads in this forum discussing the same High CPU problem with Metered Connection. Here is one with some potentially good news. One of the Microsoft Agents mentioned several times that the issue has been communicated to the related resources and they are waiting for their responses.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/click-to-run-high-cpu-usage/1b8d4ecf-fb0f-493a-b8bb-619a9d34150e?page=1&tm=1592692436182

Yesterday I noticed a second way to trigger the problem. Previously I would trigger the problem by setting Metered Connection (without Data Limit) and then rebooting. I now discovered that setting a Data Limit by itself triggers the problem and without a reboot. Office applications show High CPU but in this case Click-to-Run (SxS) is operating normally. I did not test this case after rebooting. In addition, Metered Connection is set automatically and also greyed out after setting a Data Limit.
