Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

    My Office is Office 365 Version 2005 Build 12827.20336. No more updates are available for now.

    This is not the same problem as before (2015),

    Deleting files at these folders do not fix the problem:

    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw and delete all files

    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache

    Even if I install a previous version the problem is still present (tried several from may to the last from 2019).

    ClickToRun seems to be the origin of the problem and it's not downgraded to a previous version when you install a previous version of Office.

    Does anyone know how to downgrade ClicToRun?

    I've been searching and there are ways to uninstall it, but how can I get the installer of a previous version?

    Office 2013 Version 15.0.5241.1000 is fine here with metered connection. The latest update came out one day after my initial post so I don't know if that revision would have the same problem. Office updates in this system are not installed automatically.

    The problems with Click-to-Run are not new. See this thread from early 2015 where users were seeing 20% CPU utilization. There were also high CPU problems with OneNote.

    The Microsoft Agent in the primary thread that I referenced two days ago is now recommending that users install an earlier version of Office until the problem is resolved.

    On the other hand, this is Microsoft we are talking about. Words like "fixed ASAP" and "not acceptable" do not apply. /s
