Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

The problem has been fixed in the latest version of Office 2019 v16.12827.20470. Update to this version and your problem will be fixed.

    Hope this helped.

    Thanks.

Hey guys, in this thread EliseM_456 suggested a solution that fixed my CPU/fan issue, but many of you said it didn't work, and I know why. At first when you search for the folder (C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\Spw) you probably won't find it because it's specific to one version of MS Office, and Elise should explain that. So what you do is go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office and search for

    • OfficeFileCache - it's a folder that should appear in your search results. Open it and delete all the files inside. That should fix the problem. So whatever version of MS Office you have, if you're CPU or fan is running excessively, look for the folder 'officefilecache' and delete all the files in it.

Not working. Don't waste bandwidth. Never update any Microsoft product unless there is an issue. My CPU reached 100+ and shutdown automatically. Reinstalling made way worse.

Hi, I'm Elise, an independent advisor and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

I would firstly try to run an online Office installation repair, and see if that resolves the issue.

Please see this article for details on how to do this:
