OneNote for Windows 10 freezes entire computer when drawing

I'm a student that uses OneNote for Windows 10 with my digital pen to write class notes/study and I've recently noticed that the entire computer would freeze after some use. Here are some notes regarding my situation:

  • This issue happens only when I am drawing with my digital pen.
  • Ive never encountered this issue when using OneNote by itself- it only happens when I am using it to draw while watching a Youtube video or if I use it during a conference call (I have a dual-monitor setup)
  • When it freezes, I am unable to Ctrl + Alt + Delete to reach task manager. I need to manually shut the computer down by holding down the power button.
  • If I was watching a Youtube Video or calling someone and my computer freezes, the audio will continue to run and the person on the other side will be able to hear me until about 2 minutes later when that goes away too.
  • This problem doesn't exist in OneNote 2016.
  • The computer freezes about 15 minutes into working on it.
  • I don't know if this helps, but I have a Lenovo Flex 14 (AMD) and use it with the Lenovo Active Pen 2.

Thank you!

    Hello Clark,

I have the same issue but in my case, I use a regular mouse to draw and at one point, it freezes my computer and I'm unable to kill the task with task manager.

    Hi lsha0730 & Kareemramd,

Thanks for your updates and I am really sorry for the inconvenience the issue causes. After troubleshooting steps and narrow down information above. I think it could be a compatibility issue between the digital pen and OneNote for Windows 10. However, as we have limited resource to solve the issue directly, please kindly give feedback on the issue to the related team of OneNote for Win 10 with in app feedback. You may give feedback by click Three dots at top right of the app>Settings>Feedback. Appreciate your efforts and Understanding!

As a workaround, you may work and use OneNote 2016. Apologize for the inconvenience again!

    Best Regards,

    Clark

    Hi lsha0730,

Thanks for the updates and detailed information, and it seems that the Windows OS freeze when you are taking notes in OneNote for win 10 while watching YouTube in browser/video calling. If the whole system freeze, I think the issue could be related to something in system level. Here are some suggestion for further troubleshooting the issue:

    1. Please create a new user account on Windows 10 and check if the issue happens under the new user profile. This will check if the issue is related to some user profile settings of system. You may follow the article to do so: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows 10.
    2. Some freeze issue may be caused by graphic card driver are not compatible with some application. I would suggest you make sure your graphic driver is up to date. You may download the driver from AMD website.

Hope these can help and welcome to post back if there are any updates.

    Regards,

    Clark
