Word no longer finding italics and bold

Just in the last day or so, Word no longer finds italics or bold from the Find or Find & Replace dialogue box. I should qualify that: it will find them in some of documents but not in all of them.

I work as a professional book editor and have been using Word for many years and consider myself to be fairly experienced. Yesterday, I was able to find all italics in a properly formatted manuscript (using the styles pane) and highlight all instances of italics. Today, in the same document F&R tells me there are no italics in the document, despite me staring at them onscreen (still highlighted in yellow). It's the same in many other documents today (but not all).

I can't find italics either if I search using 'Style' in the Find box.

I'm using the downloaded version of Office 365 on an up-to-date Windows 10 PC. Any ideas as to a solution. Being able to find italics and bold is crucial to my work.

It seems the issue is now fixed! I've had some major updates over the last few weeks and I'm now able to find italics and bold again just like before.  My Office 365 Business version number is 16.0.12130.20344.

Many thanks to everyone for interim solutions and to those who reported it.

Rohn007, thanks for tipping me off that someone had marked it as "answered". I have unmarked it now. I've been checking in every now and again to see if other people discover that they have the same problem, so it's not helpul if it's been marked as "answered".

This issue is a huge headache for me. I've found a sort of way round it -- by using the Styles pane, finding all the styles with italics in them and modifying the style to be a colour, which makes them easier to pick out. But it doesn't catch them all.

    Waiting patiently for a fix.

    Averill:

Since you have not commented, or actually marked the reply as "answer" you don't have to accept it. While it is "nice" to know that MS developers are aware of the problem, personally I don't see it as "the answer" to your problem. "The answer" would be notification of a fix and what update or version/build it would be included in.

If you agree with me that the currently marked reply is NOT "the answer" to your problem, as the original poster you have the option of "un-marking" the current "answer".  In the reply that is marked as answer click on the ellipsis icon (3 dots) you can select the "unmark" option.

I have the same problem. I opened Word, turned off markup, Ctrl-H, went to find tab, Ctrl-B, put in "A" and selected Find Next. Here's what I got, which you can see shouldn't be.

Hello - yes, I'm having this problem as well. Started about a month ago. It's a search/replace I've been using for years. Tried everything, no luck. Simply not recognising italic - I haven't needed to use bold.

    thanks
