I just updated to word for Mac 16.25. Word no longer remembers the sizing of the document, and always opens to a very small window. Never happened before the update.

Hi All,

We have received several reports about the same issue recently. For others to easily identify the information here, I’m summarizing the issue as follows:

Issue description:

After updating to version 16.25 (190512), Word for Mac can no loner remember the window size closed last time. It always opens at a fixed size.

Environment:

Word for Mac version 16.25 (190512) on all three latest version of Mac OS.

Assessment:

We can reproduce the same behavior on our side. And we are reporting the issue to our related team for further investigation. Once there is any update, we will post back as soon as possible. As a workaround, you can open the Word for Mac application first and open the file from the recent list or from the File menu.

Thanks,

Ran

Open Word and in the Help drop down menu select Check for Updates.

If no update is available select the Insider Update option and Fast after reading the warnings. That will give you the latest version which is effectively a beta version for testing.

This answer should be at the very top of this article!  It immediately fixed the problem.  Get a clue, MSFT!

I have exactly the same problem and it is immensely frustrating in this day and age to have to resize the window EVERY TIME I open or create a new document to a usable size. Even re-opening previously saved documents they open to this same small size. What a total joke! It is absolute incompetence to have this still be a problem in the modern age with most people having large screens nowadays.

It is no consolation at all, but the same issue exists on Windows as well. I wonder whether it is bacuse they are re-using code between the platforms much more than they were - they probably switched out the old Mac-specific code which handled the creating of a new window for some generic code that is hard-coded to always use the same small window size.

Or it's a bug, but I fear it's my previous suggestion that is correct, and ever-after we will have to re-size every single window when we create or open a document in Word.

    (Smacks head against wall)

Thanks for your information. Other responses seem to suggest that MS is now aware of the problem and are working on a fix. I was a little surprised that the Tech was not able to replicate the issue. After spending hours in chat sessions with MS, They both took control of my computer and both saw what was going on. The second person eventually told me that nothing was wrong since If I wanted it to open showing a full page, all I had to do was direct it to open in full screen! It's hard for me to understand that when people are having a problem, the chat folks seem to be the last to be informed. Anyway, thanks again.

I think they have started to address the problem, but it is not fixed. I updated Word through the beta service, to version 26 I believe. I can open previously saved documents to the same window I had composed them in.  But no luck with a new document. Well, not completely accurate. New documents now open to a larger window than before, but that has no relation to my desired standard. This new window occupies about a quarter of the screen, both horizontally and vertically. I still have to resize. I definitely do not want the document window to default to full screen. I am using a 27” imac and like to use multiple document windows when I write. A full screen solution is beyond naive. Hope MS continues to work on this. They definitely took a back step with the currently released version.
