Fonts not working on Microsoft word

I've installed a few fonts that I want to use in Microsoft Word 365. They are open type fonts. They show up in my font selection choices in Microsoft Word but when I start to type it does not use the correct font. It uses a generic font. I know that it isn't a problem with the font itself because it works in other programs. Any solutions?

Be sure to extract the font from a zip file if it came that way. The option to install or install for all users will not be available if the font is still inside a zip file.

Windows 10 makes it easy, though. In File Explorer, browse into the zip file to the font file. At the top of File Explorer, click the Extract (Compressed Folder Tools), then click Extract all. Follow the prompts, then, when the files are extracted, right-click and Install for All Users.

This is unbelievably frustrating. Just got a new laptop, installed my fonts and none of them are working (I'm a designer and use many different fonts in powerpoint). These fonts were literally just working yesterday! I tried the "install for all users" after extracting, on multiple fonts and they are not working! The font shows in the drop down list, but just displays in my document as a generic font. Paying a lot of money for 365, why are the fonts suddenly not working?!

In the end I contacted MS chat support and the tech assistant took control of my laptop to resolve the problem. Apparently Office 365 had not been installed correctly (?) and needed to be uninstalled and installed again. The tech assistant was confident that it would resolve the problem which it did.

    Hi Benjamin

I'm having difficulty with fonts in Word. I have an Office 365 subscription and I'm using Windows 10.

If I select text and then change the font using the dropdown menu on the home tab, I see the list of installed fonts with previews. Many of the fonts when selected, however, do not change in the document. The same fonts work okay in Adobe Photoshop.

    Many thanks,

    Matthew

    Hi there,

My name is Benjamin! I'm an expert Office user!

The first thing I would recommend is to make sure the fonts are properly installed:

-Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

    -Double-click Fonts.

-On the File menu, click Fonts to place a check mark.

-On the File menu, click Install New Font.

-To verify that fonts are being displayed, look in a folder that contains font files (such as the Windows\Fonts folder).

This question has come up before on the Microsoft forums and there are several other potential fixes. I have provided a link to this thread below, which you can peruse at your leisure.

trying to solve same problem..... Right click on what for "Install for all users"

    Thank you

Once you've downloaded the font, if it is in a zip file, you need to extract it.  Once its extracted, you go to the folder where you've extracted your font and right click on the font's file.  You will see several choices, but two of them are "install" and "install for all users."  Make sure you click on "Install for all users."

Jenni & Catherine - I COULD KISS YOU!  I have just spent over an hour on the phone to Emilio, who is quite possibly the worst ever Microsoft Support Agent in the world and you solved the issue!  Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Within the specific fonts, I checked the properties of the font not working properly. The permissions only allowed for the font to 'read & execute' and 'read' but not to 'write.' To fix, in the font settings in the control panel, right click on the font in question and select properties, select security, select edit, check mark the box next to 'write,' select apply and select okay. This should allow the font to write in Word.
