Microsoft 2016 for Mac Products Crash When Opening

Hi there, my Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint applications crash right after I open them. I can't even access the File/Help/etc menu because the Microsoft Error Reporting prompt opens immediately, and prevents the application's menu bar from opening. 

I'm using Mac Mojave v 10.14.3 - the most updated version - and as many have suggested, I went into Microsoft 'Check for Updates' through my Word application (the one that will open), and found I'm using the most updated version. 

I've also restarted my Mac and opened in safe mode with no difference.

Hi Michael,

As you probably already know, the 16.16.8 update is now available and this problem has been fixed.

If you have AutoUpdate set to automatically install updates, it is likely this update was automatically installed.

If you have AutoUpdate set to manual updates, you can launch AutoUpdate from any Office application and choose Check for Updates from the Help menu. If none of your applications will open, you can download the update to AutoUpdate manually from this link, then install and run AutoUpdate, which will install the 16.16.8 fixed update to Microsoft Office 2016.

I highly recommend that anyone affected launch AutoUpdate by going to the Help menu in any Office 2016 application and choosing Check for Updates. Remove your installation from Insider programs by unchecking the box that has you join the program. There will never be any future Insider builds of Office for Office 2016. The feature set of Office 2016 is not going to change, and there will never be any future Insider builds.

    this is happening to at least 30 machines across multiple clients I support - including my own Mac

    please tell me this will be resolved Quickly

    you have rolled out and update which has basically FECKED every mac on the planet using Microsoft Office

    I found a way to provisionally circumvent the problem and access the Office apps.

    First, using the Finder Menu "Go" while pressing "alt", you see Library, select it, the Library opens. Then go to /Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/ and move the file  MicrosoftRegistrationDB.reg to the Desktop. Do not close the folder where you picked it.

    Normally just after that Word should respond to the Open command, and re-create a file with the same name in the same folder. Without quitting Word, get info (cmd+I) from the newly created file  MicrosoftRegistrationDB.reg in the above folder and lock it by clicking the "Locked" box.

    Then normally you can quit Word.

    That allows a restart of every Office application. Your macros should have been preserved and work almost OK. BUT you lose the memory of the recently opened documents.

    Does anyone have thoughts on whether this is a safe, permanent answer? For instance, might locking the file (and then forgetting having done so) interfere with future updates?

    Meanwhile, thanks fjlguillot for a promising suggestion.

    The last update pushed through messed up my outlook too. it would not open,I downloaded and installed and when it opened it wanted to be activated. When I went to activate it said I didn't have a license . Called Microsoft and se 

    he remotely removed office 2016 and re-installed. She hung up and said all will be okay. When I restarted all of office has now asking for activation and then said it found no license , no joy. Called back deck support and explained that it is the latest updated thats causing the problems. Tech went through remote again and could not solve problem. I now have appointment for tomorrow between 1 and 3 pm. with next level tech. 

    I have a Super Duper clone of the main drive, I disconnected from internet and booted into the clone drive. I turned off automatic updated in Office and re-imaged the main drive. Once the drive was imaged I made it back to boot disk and started u. I went back into office to be sure that updated were off and then re-connected the internet.

    Everything is back up and running and there is no longer a tab asking for activation in any of the office suites - the problem is definately due to a problem in the build after 16.16.7

    Note : I had don the re-imaging the night before when the problem first surfaced, and it worked , but I didn't turn off the automatic updates the first time and it must have installed the update again over night, which broke it and caused the activation requirement again.

    I am going to assume that as long as I keep the updates to manual and do not apply the updates for a while it will be okay.
