Sharing Violations

Since installing Catalina 10.15 and Office 365 16.30 (updates installed the same day (something I will not due again)) when I attempt to save a workbook that I have used for a couple of years, I receive the alert: 'Your changes could not be saved  to xxx.xlsx due to a sharing violation.  I then receive the alert The file format end extension of 646820000.mactf don't match. 

I contacted the Answer Desk who say it is an Apple Product and Apple support said it is a Microsoft problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

    I have the same problem, Version 16.35 and I am NOT sharing or accessing shared documents.  These are Excel files that are only mine and only saved to my drive.  

    I am getting both the "Sharing Violation" (even though I'm not sharing it), and the "The file format and extension of XXX.xls don't match.  The file could be corrupted or unsafe....."

    Hello,

    My name is Tom and I am an engineer in Office for Apple platforms. First: sorry to see you are running into this. We have been looking into this issue for quite a while but unfortunately we did not have much luck reproducing it on our side. We also reviewed the changes which went between 16.29 and 16.30 release but found nothing suspicious.

    We are looking for someone who is experiencing this problem reliably (or at least often) at this moment and would be willing to work with us closely to follow some special steps, send us logs, etc.

    There are 2 ways you can volunteer:

    • reply here and SteveKra will contact you personally [do not include your e-mail in the public post :-)]
    • send a feedback via Office app, provide your e-mail and include "Sharing Violations Repro" in the message. As you may guess we receive a lot of feedback so we need a keyword to find the right one.

    I happen to have the Synology NAS as well. I was trying with one admin account and accessing a shared Excel xlsx from different computers but it did not trigger the problem. Do you still experience this issue? If yes, I would like to learn about your setup and try on my end. Is it one user or multiple users, are the users with admin privileges or regular users, etc. Is the file encrypted or protected by DRM? Is it the new .xlsx file format or legacy .xls?

    Tom,

    Although I consistently had the problem since 16.30, after installing the latest update, 16.35,  a few weeks ago we've not seen the error again.
