I need to update my MS Word application to use APA 7?

As other people have said, Microsoft probably won't update the references & bibliography facility to include APA 7, at least not in a near future. You can manage the references manually, or you can choose a third-party references manager such as EndNote.

The changes from APA 6th to 7th are incremental and minor.

    • If you edit the APA 6th style outputs to APA 7th by hand, the most tedious and obvious but a good change is all work with more than two authors are referred to as  FirstAuthorSirname et al. (PublicationYear)  in in-text citation from the first citation.
    • No publisher location is required. E.g., Springer Nature. It doesn't matter if Heidelberg, Germany or New York.
    • No types of e-document (e.g., kindle, Google Books etc.) is required.
    • A totally useless phrase "Retrieved from" is no longer required.
    • Fully searchable CrossRef recommended URL for doi (digital object identifier) for electronic documents (e.g., https://doi.org/[here goes in doi number of course without square brackets]
    • We can finally report Article No. wihtout page range for electronic journal articles.
    • Authors up to the 20th are now dutifully listed in the References list. (if you're 2nd to 20th author this is the only place you see your name listed.)
    • Space between sentences is one space.  Not two blank spaces.

That's it. Although I might have missed some esoteric ones, it takes about 5 min. to explain the differences to psychology students who have basic knowledge of APA Publication Manual (6th ed.).

All changes are simplifying outdated requirements in the APA 6th ed. and makes sense in my view. If a software engineer who know

the rudimental knowledge of APA style can edit XML or whatever in perhaps one afternoon over a cup of coffee?

Has anyone searched GitHub (and another coding site whose name escapes me) whether someone is working for the script for gnu or public domain based word processing software program such as Open Office or similar.  The same or similar codes should work for MS Word365, should it?

In that time a lot of things have changed. Citing online material has become more common, the use of inclusive and bias-free language is increasingly important, and the technology used by researchers and students has changed.

The 7th edition addresses these changes by providing better and more extensive guidelines. This article outlines the biggest changes that you should know about.

    .

The APA released 7th edition in October 2019.  So yes it is still relatively recent. But based on past experience, we can't expect to see the update in the foreseeable feature.

One of the most popular guides for academic writing standards across the curriculum is scheduled for some changes. It’s been a decade since The American Psychological Association (APA) last revamped its writing manual.  For many editors, faculty, and students, this means mastering new rules in short order.

And while change can be scary, when it comes to APA, all appearances indicate that the changes will be mostly user-friendly.  The group hosts a free online preview of its introduction to the new edition, and the APA’s social media feed has also leaked some helpful details.

Based on that information, these predictions for the changes we’ll see aren’t too bold. Here’s a quick table to help you and your colleagues brace for the changes:
