Power Point slide show keep jumping back to prior slide

New MacBookPro.

Just installed Office365.

Using PP to view slides from Multimedia Exercises for Basic Japanese Grammar.

One has to read/respond/click-to-hear-answer/click-to-go-to-next-page/next-question.

If I am idle for a random period of time, it pops back to a prior slide.

Sometimes it happens quite soon after clicking onto a new slide, so it is not a general timeout feature.

Also, the slide it pops back to changes as on proceeds further.  It breaks the basic flow logic of the presentation as to get back, you end up activating some next state you don't necessarily want to.  IE, getting back to read the question makes it think you want to see the answer, but you are not yet ready to see it.

My question is: is this a bug in the slides, or a bug in the programme?

The slides force one to open read-only, and I don't know much about PP so I don't know where to look to see if there is some time-based thing which kicks in if I am idle.

Hi All,

I'd like to share a summary for the issue here which will benefit other community members.

Symptoms:

Power Point slide show may jump automatically back to prior slide 

Environment:

  1. OS: Mojave 10.14.1 (18B75).
  2. PowerPoint version: 16.18 (Wait on a slide for about 30 seconds in full screen presentation mode, the slide will automatically skip to a previous slide)
  3. PowerPoint version: 16.19 (181109) (Some customers fix the issue by upgrading to 16.19, but the other ones still have the issue) (The 16.19 may make the issue idle time from 30 seconds to 10 minutes)
  4. The issue happens to all files
  5. The issue happens in full screen presentation mode but not in presenter view mode.
  6. The issue disappears when all the customers trying to do a screen recording.

Workaround:

Play the presentation in presenter view mode.

Assessment:

Please update the Office to the latest 16.21 version to get the fix.

Hi all,

Thank you all for providing related videos and logs. We have narrowed down the root cause, and we're working with Apple for a fix. 

In the mean time, we have added a temporary solution in the next update.

As a current workaround, if you have more than 1 graphics cards on your device, you can do the following:

    (1) Go to System Preferences

    (2) Go to Energy Saver

****(3) Uncheck Automatic graphics switching(If you do not see this option, you only have 1 graphics card)

We completely understand your frustration with this problem. We appreciate your patience.

    Hi Beto,

    Thanks for providing us the sample presentation in the private message. We have tested it by our side in the 16.18 version in Mojave 10.14.1, but failed to reproduce the issue. According to your descriptions, our reproduce steps are:

    1.       Open the sample presentation in 16.18 PowerPoint for Mac in Mojave 10.14.1.

    2.       Play the presentation in the full screen (not the presenter view) “from the start”.

    3.       Click to play the slides

    4.       Go to slide marked (9), as you mentioned that the issue happens when we go through past the slide identified as "8".

    5.       Wait for more than 1 minute. About 67 seconds.

    6.       No issue. And when we click the mouse, the presentation continues to show the rest slides fine. That means, we failed to reproduce the issue.

    You can help us double confirm the reproduce steps above. And we will appreciate if you can provide us the issue video.

    As you also mentioned that you only run into the problem on MacBookPro (laptop) not Mac Pro (Desktop). And the PowerPoint version and OS version are the same. And we failed to reproduce the issue by our side even with your sample file. We suspect: the issue is not related to files or versions, but the device environment. For example, 3^rd^ party compatibility issue. Please do the steps below and tell us the result:

    1.    To narrow down the issue related to any startup apps, extensions, custom font, some caches etc. on your Mac, please run Mac in safe modeto see whether the issue persists in this mode.

    2.    To narrow down the issue related to any 3^rd^ party add-ins inside the PowerPoint app, please go to Insert tab > My Add-ins and check whether there’s any add-ins installed. If so, temporarily removing them to see the result.

    Hey, Beto and Everyone Else -

    At some point yesterday, Jim suggested upgrading my Office 365 to 16.19 - which I did.

    I am now on my MacBook Pro with Mojave 10.14.1 and my PowerPoint is 16.19.

    The first time I tried it out, the cover slide came in after one minute. Then when I tried to do a screen video, it did not repeat. I tried out PowerPoint several times yesterday evening and could not get the problem to happen again.

    This morning I read Rena's note to Beto and I tried out PowerPoint one more time - sure enough the problem occurred after about 30 seconds. So I tried another screen video and it did not happen again. I have not been able to get it to flip out again.

    My conclusion is that version 16.19 is a partial fix.

    I doubt that it is because I am making the video that it corrects the problem - but who knows?

    It is very weird to me that those of us like Beto, Stephanie and me who have been using PowerPoint week in and week out for years now have this weird problem and it can be attributed to third party items when what we all have in common is the new Mojave operating system and an updated Office 365 suite.

    I do wonder if this is always a laptop problem and not a desktop problem. Perhaps it is related to the computer's power saving signal or something like that - since it happens in a period when we are letting it idle.
