Power Point slide show keep jumping back to prior slide

New MacBookPro.

Just installed Office365.

Using PP to view slides from Multimedia Exercises for Basic Japanese Grammar.

One has to read/respond/click-to-hear-answer/click-to-go-to-next-page/next-question.

If I am idle for a random period of time, it pops back to a prior slide.

Sometimes it happens quite soon after clicking onto a new slide, so it is not a general timeout feature.

Also, the slide it pops back to changes as on proceeds further.  It breaks the basic flow logic of the presentation as to get back, you end up activating some next state you don't necessarily want to.  IE, getting back to read the question makes it think you want to see the answer, but you are not yet ready to see it.

My question is: is this a bug in the slides, or a bug in the programme?

The slides force one to open read-only, and I don't know much about PP so I don't know where to look to see if there is some time-based thing which kicks in if I am idle.

Hi All,

I'd like to share a summary for the issue here which will benefit other community members.

Symptoms:

Power Point slide show may jump automatically back to prior slide 

Environment:

  1. OS: Mojave 10.14.1 (18B75).
  2. PowerPoint version: 16.18 (Wait on a slide for about 30 seconds in full screen presentation mode, the slide will automatically skip to a previous slide)
  3. PowerPoint version: 16.19 (181109) (Some customers fix the issue by upgrading to 16.19, but the other ones still have the issue) (The 16.19 may make the issue idle time from 30 seconds to 10 minutes)
  4. The issue happens to all files
  5. The issue happens in full screen presentation mode but not in presenter view mode.
  6. The issue disappears when all the customers trying to do a screen recording.

Workaround:

Play the presentation in presenter view mode.

Assessment:

Please update the Office to the latest 16.21 version to get the fix.

Hi all,

Thank you all for providing related videos and logs. We have narrowed down the root cause, and we're working with Apple for a fix. 

In the mean time, we have added a temporary solution in the next update.

As a current workaround, if you have more than 1 graphics cards on your device, you can do the following:

    (1) Go to System Preferences

    (2) Go to Energy Saver

****(3) Uncheck Automatic graphics switching(If you do not see this option, you only have 1 graphics card)

We completely understand your frustration with this problem. We appreciate your patience.

    Good day,

    I also noticed this seemingly random jumping of slides during presentations, since I upgraded to Mojave (I’m now on v10.14.1). 

    I also figured out the workaround to open my presentation in Keynote. 

    But it bugs me that I pay for a full Office 365 for Mac - and then have this type of issues. 

    E.g. I also noticed that the Mac version have a lot less functionality than Windows version. 

    My address book, search function and Skype for business also does not work in the Outlook.

    Rena, I've followed your instructions as best I could.

    • Re: safe mode - I couldn't get O365 to work in safe mode.  A video of what I saw is here, but neither PPT nor Word worked correctly.
    • Re: Add-ins - I confirmed that I don't have any, as seen in this screenshot
    • Re: Activity Monitor - I couldn't get a sample as you suggested, as the 3 second sample your instructions captured weren't sufficient.  I was able to get a few good samples using this command instead "sample $(pgrep PowerPoint) 360 1 -file /tmp/ppt-process-sample.txt".  I've uploaded a few here, here, and here.  NOTE: The different captures are of different occurrences of this issue.  The first and third use the previously provided sample PPT.

    Hi Jake,

    Thanks for helping us collect the video and sample file. Now we can know clearly how the issue looks like.

    In the meantime, can you also help us confirm the information below:

    1. To narrow down the issue related to any startup apps, extensions, custom font, some caches etc. on your Mac, please run Mac in safe modeto see whether the issue persists in this mode.

    2. To narrow down the issue related to any 3^rd^ party add-ins inside the PowerPoint app, please go to Insert tab > My Add-ins and check whether there’s any add-ins installed. If so, temporarily removing them to see the result.

    If the issue persists, please help us get a sample process log at your convenience. To do that:

    When the issue happens, navigate to Finder>Applications>utilities>activity monitor, double click activity monitor, under the process name column, double click Microsoft PowerPoint, then click Sample. I have sent you a private message as well via this link, you can provide us the log file there.
