Why does my excel window lag so much when moved around the screen? no other app windows have the problem

Thank you for your detailed experimentations. What you discovered makes no sense except the obvious. Microsoft has an odd way of writing software. Specifically when interfacing with hardware.

Sadly, my company locks all settings, and I can not hide the window contents when dragging. Wish I could. That's how life used to be anyway. When Microsoft first started adding so many visual features into the OS, performance tanked. Until hardware caught up of course.

Maybe it has to do with the mouse and the USB polling frequency.

After several attempts, it is indeed the USB rate. I still had a mouse genius gamer. I installed the driver and with the application I lowered the rate to a minimum and the problem was solved. I will leave in Spanish, the key words to help people

I have been having this exact problem, only that I didn't know the cause. After reading complains on here, I tried other apps and realised it was peculiar to Microsoft Office apps, especially Excel.

To all still having this issue, I think the best and fastest way to temporarily (only Microsoft can solve permanently) solve this is to:

Windows 10 (you can check how to on lower OS)

1. Go to advanced system settings
2. Click on "advanced" tab.
3. Click "performance settings".
4. Uncheck "show windows content while dragging".
5. Click "apply" and then "OK".
6. Drag the excel window again, I bet your live just got easier. Smiles.

Recently there was a lagging issue related to "gaming" mice.  These mice have a "high" scanning rate (1000+ times per second vs 100 times per second) meaning they can track MUCH smaller moves of the mouse. Useful in games, NOT for Office. Some people found reducing the mouse scan rate, usually to the minimum, helped with their problem.

Some mouse drivers allow you to set separate profiles by application.

As I noticed the same problem (I'm using desktop computer) I tried many methods mentioned here, like turning off hardware acceleration, one-note synchronization, reinstalling and so on. Nothing works.

I'm also using high frequency/resolution mouse and I tried also lowering it - I admit, lag get less noticeable, but one thing I do not understand is why this is happening only in excel (for me at least, apart from excel I'm not using outlook, just acccess, word and one-note) and why only when I open spreadsheet (even empty one).

This is somewhat counter intuitive to linking the problem to gaming mouse only - seems more like bug in the excel code.

So... @Microsoft reps, any chance you would approach the problem seriously?
