Why does my excel window lag so much when moved around the screen? no other app windows have the problem

When I disable hardware acceleration, lagging gets jumpy and worse. Excel could be a multi-threaded app on multiple cores. Honestly, I'm not sure how Windows or Excel is architected.

One new observation.. the window drag acts like the position is passed through a low pass filter. Like the distance algorithm is accumulating. It does act like a mouse pointer problem, but I have a cheap mouse. Plus only Microsoft office apps are affected.

The Problem: Report Rate on your mouse is too high.  It is polling too many times before the refresh on your screen and it lags to catch up.

The Solution: Lower the polling rate to at least 500 or lower.  After selecting 500, it fixed it for me and lowering to 250 and 125 felt the same so I stayed at 500.

First check your polling rate

If you are over 500Hz, then this fix is for you.

For my Logitech G502, that means opening the software application > customize onboard profile (the moues/memory chip icon) > report rate > selecting 500 for polling rate.

• If you don't have Logitech, try to find the report rate or polling rate or reports per second for your software and lowering it to 500 or lower
• If you use Window's driver for your mouse, try installing the proper software for your mouse so you can change the report rate
• If you can't do that, try downloading mouse rate adjusting program, you can find some on Tom's Hardware and simply adjust to 250 or 500 instead of 1000

Did this ever get solved for you? I have had the same issues, mostly with Excel. Something that SEEMS to have helped this morning is a display setting change. Time will tell if it's my imagination / temporary or a real fix:

• Right-click on the desktop and select Display Settings.
• Scroll down and click on Graphics settings
• There's now a dialogue that offers the ability to change graphics settings by App.
• In the drop-down box I selected Universal app, then a second drop-down appears, ion which I selected Office and clicked Add.
• Office now appears below as an icon. Click the icon and select Options.
• From the three options of System Default, Power Saving and High Performance, I selected High Performance and clicked Save.
• You may need to exit all Office apps before the new setting takes effect. I simply did a full restart of the PC to make sure of it (1TB SSD = quick restart :-) )

The Excel windows still have a small amount of lag, but not as bad as before.

I would be interesting to know if this helps anybody else.

Or probably has to do with the 'Show Animations in Windows' option in Windows 10. I turned it off, restarted and now the problem is gone.

This issue has not been fixed. You can change a mouse with lower reporting rate(low end optical mouse) to resolve the issue.
