Microsoft Office 2010 on an XP OS

@Rich Mercer, Make sure no tick in the box against the offending update before doing right click to hide it.

I couldn't find the files to remove, but I was able to find the Office installation disk so I reinstalled Officer 2010 and all is now fine

In Add/Remove Programs, did you have tickbox for show updates ticked. All installed updates should then be listed after Office, but not in KB order.

By reinstalling Office again from scratch you should get security updates queued again, but in the meantime beware you have an unpatched application, albeit a working one.

However, be prepared for your solution not to work next time.  In an earlier instance, I tried reinstalling from my Office Home and Student disc and it did not cure the problem because the offending update was still installed.

Here is  one that kills XP for me recently

KB4461614 ( I note down in the replies that  others have noticed that one as well )

Reluctantly I have disabled updates now.

 I did have some success at automating  keeping a track of the “Bad” and “good” updates,  but a couple of things hampered me , …_

_The “wmic” way most people think of using for getting automatically a list of updates…. That  actually ( at least as far as I can tell in XP Vista and Win7 ) mostly only list updates specific to the operating system. So it misses all the updates that usually give problems

_  I did find a useful free software from Nir Sofer that does list all updates. But strangely it misses all Office updates in XP

_... those problems meant that I had to make a list manually of all my Office updates  after every bundle of updaters came in ,  which I  then feed in my routines which sorted the “good” from the “bad”

So if anyone passing knows how to get a full  list programmatically of Updates in XP I would be very grateful of a Heads up

Alternatively if there is any other way to block specific updates , that could be explained to a Layman like me,  I would be very interested. ( I have not been able to understand any way I have seen suggested yet - I am a computer novice - that's puting it politely :-) )
