Microsoft Office 2010 on an XP OS

    Note that the KB3054873 causes problems only in Excel 2003: Specifically it kills ActiveX controls embedded in a Worksheet. If you are never likely to use ActiveX controls embedded in a Worksheet in Excel 2003, then that Update may not give you problems.

KB4462174 is the latest update that is killing Office 2010 in XP for many of us recently.  ( I have Office 2003 in addition to  Office 2010 on some machines, that’s why I keep KB3054873 also away )

As edreded says, that KB4462174 seems to be the one  lurking about at the moment, “ ready to pounce on ya!”

 What I  have done recently on most of my XP machines is::

Starting from the Microsoft symbol bottom left try to navigate through something like Control Panel to  something like Automatic Updates.

Then click to be informed of updates.

What then happens is that if updates are available, then at exactly the time that I set for updates, then a small pop up comes from somewhere bottom right and asks me if I want them. These screenshots are from a German machine, but they might help give you the general idea:

Also, at bottom right I have a Little Yellow Shield. If I click on that it tells me if I have any updates waiting to be downloaded:

As you see in that last screenshot I have currently KB3054873 and KB4462174 “waiting to get me!!” :)

Here is a typical chain of events by me these days... https://imgur.com/g4hEfdD , https://imgur.com/mwkahKq , https://imgur.com/l9LMtHc .. as you see , one way or another, I end up with a short list of updates that are waiting, and I can uncheck any I don't want..

The only one I have left hidden on Microsoft Update is Office 2010 KB4462174. I have uninstalled it and also others in the past, but now only this one seems to be still available for download.

Thanks for your help.  I deleted these two files (KB3054873, KB4462174) and the problem was solved.    I did not find the other updates so hopefully no more issues.  Also, went over privacy and security protocols and eliminated and unchecked/checked receiving any future updates.  I didn't see the box where it notifies me prior to installing any updates maybe I missed something.

I checked up the update situation on a few of my XP machines a few days back, just to update myself…  

I downloaded  some of the   updates which were waiting, ( I have chosen now to be informed of updates so that I can selectively download them)

Initially  did not download these two , which were waiting: KB3054873, KB4462174. The first I know to kill a lot of things in Excel 2003, ( in all operating systems),  and the second is our latest friend that kills Office 2010 in XP

Later , I also rechecked all  the 4 updates which we know kill off Office 2010 in XP. KB4461614 , KB4461522 , KB4462157 ,  KB4462174 :-

I tried reinstalling them on a few machines just to see what happens..

KB4461522 is no longer available

KB4461614 still kills off Office 2010 in XP for me, removing it solves the problem

KB4462174 still kills off Office 2010 in XP for me, removing it solves the problem

KB4462157  still kills off Office 2010 in XP for me, removing it solves the problem

I also tried this combination: KB4461614 and KB4462157 . I tried this extra experiment because Microsoft say that one reason for KB4462157 is to fix the problem that Access 2010 and Excel 2010 stop working after installing KB4461614. I found  that the double combination also kills off Office 2010 in XP for me, and removing them  solves the problem
