MS 2010 apps disabled on XP OS

I have two computers running on XP and beginning on 14 Oct 18, they have both refused to open MS Word 2010.  They both give the same set of messages as follows:

“WINWORD.EXE -Entry Point Not Found

X  The procedure entry point GetDataFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL.32.DLL.”

When I press the “OK” command, I get the following message:

“Error”

“The operation system is not presently configured to run this application”

When I press the “OK” command, the error message leaves and nothing else happens.

Because it has occurred on both computers, I assume it is a system issue and not related to the individual computer.

Can you please explain to me what the problem is and what actions I might take to correct the problem and continue to use MS Word 2010 on these computers?

My assumption that the problem was caused by Microsoft and not related to the individual computer was correct.

Updates were continuing to be installed on my “Office Home and Student” without my knowledge and the latest update was dated the very day my programs were disabled.

Thanks to the assistance of everyone who responded to my Forum request, and especially: Hojjat Bohlooli who supplied the instructions for removing the offending update, both my XP computers are now up and running my Office 2010 programs properly.

As a conclusion to this matter, and to assist others who have been damaged by this problem, here is the remedial process as provided by Hojjat Bohlooli:

Uninstall recently installed update of office 2010 named KB4461522.  This update breaks compatibility of office 2010 on windows XP.

·        Open 'Add or Remove programs' from Control Panel

·        Select the “show updates” on the top of window

·        Find Update, KB4461522 dated 14 Nov 18 for Office 2010 in the list and remove it.

Reboot computer

    Hello Mats Eriksson,

    As Rich Mercer says, the update KB4462174 is the most recent Office 2010 killing update that a few of us have been victim to. Check to see if you have that and uninstall if you have it.

    Today, I received the notification that, "there are updates available to be installed" on my "Office Home and Student" running Word 2010 on my XP OS computer.  I thought I would try the installation as recommended and see what might result.  Previously, KB4462174 was found to disable Word 2010.  I opened Word as normal before installing the "recommended updates," and after the installation, Word was disabled so I started a search for ....2174.  Sure enough, it had been reinstalled so upon uninstall, Word worked as normal.

    I wonder when/if the programmers will remove these offending updates that cause so much trouble for loyal Microsoft clients.  Why should we have to permanently block the offending updates when it would be so easy to remove them at the source?

    Hi Mats,

    The problem started for me one day so I looked for KB's from near by dates and found it.

    Maybe there is an earlier or later patch for MS Office that contained similar fix.

    Look for those latest Office patches and try removing them one by one.

    Hope you'll find the solution.

    Not anyone of the three KB4462157 - KB4461522 - KB4461614 were installed on my computer anyway. Win XP3 SP3 Office2010 (of course real licenses!) . I did scrutinize the updates in "add remove progams" several times. Took me quite a while. I tried to repair installation of Office 2010 but it didn't help either.

    I do have "manually select when to download" and I remember not accepting any updates at all, not even today. The error (on all office pgms) occured yesterday. The microsoft solution with the "new" updates does only apply to newer OS. They only urge you to remove something that wasn't there from the start.

    If there was a solution just to "unload" all the latest ones, and then if needed, "all the latest ones before that one", it would mitigate things. I have never had automatically updates active, just "passive" updates, i e showing me when there are any and let me decide. I havent updated since 1st 2nd January, and all office pgms worked since then. Yesterday the just stopped with the same errors there.

    I've even searched registry for "remains, residues" of KB4462157, KB4461522 , KB4461614, but they're not there at all.

    So if these errors occurs even without these kb updates, what else is there?

    Pressing F8 at startup and choose "latest known working operating system" ? ;-)
