MS 2010 apps disabled on XP OS

I have two computers running on XP and beginning on 14 Oct 18, they have both refused to open MS Word 2010.  They both give the same set of messages as follows:

“WINWORD.EXE -Entry Point Not Found

X  The procedure entry point GetDataFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL.32.DLL.”

When I press the “OK” command, I get the following message:

“Error”

“The operation system is not presently configured to run this application”

When I press the “OK” command, the error message leaves and nothing else happens.

Because it has occurred on both computers, I assume it is a system issue and not related to the individual computer.

Can you please explain to me what the problem is and what actions I might take to correct the problem and continue to use MS Word 2010 on these computers?

My assumption that the problem was caused by Microsoft and not related to the individual computer was correct.

Updates were continuing to be installed on my “Office Home and Student” without my knowledge and the latest update was dated the very day my programs were disabled.

Thanks to the assistance of everyone who responded to my Forum request, and especially: Hojjat Bohlooli who supplied the instructions for removing the offending update, both my XP computers are now up and running my Office 2010 programs properly.

As a conclusion to this matter, and to assist others who have been damaged by this problem, here is the remedial process as provided by Hojjat Bohlooli:

Uninstall recently installed update of office 2010 named KB4461522.  This update breaks compatibility of office 2010 on windows XP.

·        Open 'Add or Remove programs' from Control Panel

·        Select the “show updates” on the top of window

·        Find Update, KB4461522 dated 14 Nov 18 for Office 2010 in the list and remove it.

Reboot computer

    After reading and trying to get my Office program to run I give up. I use both Windows XP and 7 and upgrading is not possible because of important software I need to use. I cannot find any of the many listed corrective files. I am a proficient computer user, not a computer technician, I don't have the time to keep playing with MS "non fixes". I will use the only solution I have found that works and that is something other then MS Office.

    I tried the update on a couple of my XP machines and confirmed that it kills Office 2010. De installing and all is well.

    Apologies Mats Eriksson, I miss understood. Sorry

    For most of us the problem has been an error starting like “.. procedure entry point GetDateFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll….” This started around October/November 2018, and from then, and still, it hits people unawares This occurs immediately after an update  , currently KB4462174. ( Previously 3 other updates  also caused the same problem. One of those is no longer available, the other two are available, but don’t seem to be being passed down currently). Once again just for clarity here is the full list of  so far known “Office 2010   in XP “killers” “:

    KB4461522 KB4461614 KB4462174 KB4462157 

    It was explained in the second post here by Jay as being a problem caused by an update incompatible with XP.

    It is indeed very strange if you have no updates and still have this particular error

    Or do you get a different error message?

    By the way, I have been looking at this issue and other similar ones for a couple of months. I can tell you that mostly , but not always,  the list is a good indication of the updates that you have. So if you see none then I would think you have none. ( In other operating systems I have a couple of other ways to check programmatically the update list. These unfortunately don’t work in XP. (Occaisionally, the different methods produce slightly different lists of installed updates for the same computer.) )

    Please confirm for us if you have this, or similar, error message “.. procedure entry point GetDateFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll….”
