MS 2010 apps disabled on XP OS

I have two computers running on XP and beginning on 14 Oct 18, they have both refused to open MS Word 2010.  They both give the same set of messages as follows:

“WINWORD.EXE -Entry Point Not Found

X  The procedure entry point GetDataFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL.32.DLL.”

When I press the “OK” command, I get the following message:

“Error”

“The operation system is not presently configured to run this application”

When I press the “OK” command, the error message leaves and nothing else happens.

Because it has occurred on both computers, I assume it is a system issue and not related to the individual computer.

Can you please explain to me what the problem is and what actions I might take to correct the problem and continue to use MS Word 2010 on these computers?

My assumption that the problem was caused by Microsoft and not related to the individual computer was correct.

Updates were continuing to be installed on my “Office Home and Student” without my knowledge and the latest update was dated the very day my programs were disabled.

Thanks to the assistance of everyone who responded to my Forum request, and especially: Hojjat Bohlooli who supplied the instructions for removing the offending update, both my XP computers are now up and running my Office 2010 programs properly.

As a conclusion to this matter, and to assist others who have been damaged by this problem, here is the remedial process as provided by Hojjat Bohlooli:

Uninstall recently installed update of office 2010 named KB4461522.  This update breaks compatibility of office 2010 on windows XP.

·        Open 'Add or Remove programs' from Control Panel

·        Select the “show updates” on the top of window

·        Find Update, KB4461522 dated 14 Nov 18 for Office 2010 in the list and remove it.

Reboot computer

    According to https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/office2010/2010/01/22/office-2010-system-requirements/, Office 2010 32-bit is supported on Windows XP SP3. However, that article is almost as old as Office 2010 itself.

    Some investigation shows these bits of information:

    • The procedure name in question is GetDateFormatEx (there is no GetDataFormatEx in any version of kernel32.dll).
    • The Windows 10 version of kernel32.dll contains three entry points named GetDateFormatA, GetDateFormatW, and GetDateFormatEx. The Windows XP version of the dll contains only the first two of those.
    • Various files that are parts of Office 2010 have had monthly security updates, and there was one released on 9 Oct 2018 (although the files on my PC show a modified date of 20 Oct). The patch for Word 2010 was KB4092439, indicated at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464656/october-2018-updates-for-microsoft-office.

    It's possible that this update changed which entry point Word looks for, and that it would work correctly in later Windows versions but not XP.

    Of course, you know that you're more than 4 years past the end of Microsoft's support for Windows XP (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/WindowsForBusiness/end-of-xp-support) and 3 years past the end of mainstream support for Office 2010.

    I'm going to ask the Word development team to look into the problem, but there may not be a solution.

    I read in another blog that the new updates to Office 2010 caused those using Windows XP to lose their ability to use Office 2010.  It did not affect Windows 7 or newer.  They all got the same message.  PLEASE FIX THIS MICROSOFT!
