Windows 10 OneNote app sucks.

Microsoft, you really screwed up OneNote.  OneNote 2013 and 2016 were awesome.  Loaded with awesomely rich features that made it incredibly powerful tool to get date of all types into and then back out of it in various forms.  The latest piece of junk OneNote is so limited  that is mirrors the crappy free app that Microsoft offers for free as a phone app.  The OneNote app is okay in a pinch if you just need to print out of it or upload something into it and view it but sucks otherwise.

Problem - You are charging me $100.00 a year for office and are offering a program that has less features than the original OneNote that came out back in 2003 or there about.  That is like giving up your 2019 state of the art computer for an old relic from the mid 1990s running Windows 95.  Oh yes please, give me dial up internet service while your at it.  Does the acronym AOL ring any bells?  Put another way OneNote 2016 is a Lexus and OneNote in Windows 10 or included in the latest release of Office 365 is a rusted out Ford Pinto that burns as much oil as it leaks.

Thank God that you can download OneNote 2016 still and set it as a default app.  However, Microsoft openly admits that they are no longer updating OneNote 2016.

What a useless, piece of garbage OneNote is. Notebook merge feature: nonexistent. Notebook delete: pointless because it creates "ghost" deleted notebooks that clutter up your list of living notebooks.

First of all, I imported my notes from Evernote. I had to export from Evernote and then separately import into OneNote's (toddler-level, feature-sparse) Windows 10 app because the app's importer didn't work. Whatever.

But now I'm stuck with a separate Evernote import notebook because Microsoft has apparently decided that I shouldn't be able to merge notebooks. Seriously, ****, can't merge notebooks?

And not only do I have more notebooks than I want,but every time I go online to use OneNote in the browser have to get confused by seeing 2 or 3 other "ghost" notebooks that I created and then deleted during the period when I was first getting set up with and playing around with the features of OneNote. Apparently I have to live with the visual clutter of "deleted" notebooks every time I try to look at a list of the notebooks I actually use. Because... reasons?

I may go back to Evernote, whose search function on Android is totally broken. That's how bad OneNote is: I may go back to using software that I can't even use on my phone.

YOU'RE GOOD!! So was this person (and others on here): "A few months back when I got a new laptop I installed O365 for Windows 10 and my old OneNote 2016 desktop app had vanished and left me with something that looked like it was for middle schoolers."

But you're not stuck -- as others have pointed out, you can still download OneNote 2016 for free on Microsoft's site (they are purposely not advertising that so they can steer people into this nightmare on Windows 10). Here is the link:

I agree with Big Mike 311.  I first came into the Office 365 world at Office 2016.  So my first exposure to OneNote was the 2016 desktop version.  I'm mainly an Access and Excel user but I thought it was about time I found out how OneNote worked.  No sooner had I started learning OneNote 2016 desktop that the OneNote app arrived.  As a lot of people are saying, this app is soooo featureless, it is a backward step.  I stick with it because of my commitment to Excel, Access and Word but this app is very lightweight.

At the moment I have given up on using OneNote at all because the OneNote links on say Outlook menus all default to the ON app, is there any way of changing that to OneNote 2016?

You can still install OneNote 2016 for free from Microsoft's site (they are purposely not advertising that so they can steer people into this nightmare on Windows 10). Here is the link:

Once you install it, your OneNote links on Outlook menus will point to the real OneNote. I work with OneNote 2016 every day (and have Office 365 installed) -- and I never have to interact with the Windows 10 version (thank God) ;o)
