I use several templates that have bold, italic, and underlined headers/paragraph headings. Every now and again when I open these templates (and any document based on them) none of the formatting is displayed on my PC screen ie the whole document looks like it is typed in plain times roman 12 with no bold, italic, underline anywhere.
I have opened word 2016 in safe mode and the same thing is occurring.
I have printed a page that I know should have the formatting and it is printing plain too.
I have not touched the formatting in any way.
I have found that, randomly, rebooting will solve the issue and the bold etc displays and prints. However, for the last couple of days this is not working.
Also, when viewed on a PC I send the completed docs to, all the correct formatting is displayed?!
Any ideas?

Just to add, this is the 'reveal formatting' information. It says bold and italic but the text on the screen is plain.

As I replied to your email, somehow TNR Bold had been applied as direct formatting. On my end, selecting text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar to remove the direct formatting, then reapplying the bold formatting, corrected the problem in the Reveal Formatting task pane.
I am now convinced this is a Word issue that has been occurring since an 'online repair' of my office to fix 'another' problem I was having (word randomly hanging on certain actions and which I am still having) and also a fair few other niggling/annoying problems since. Since the repair, the formatting issue is permenant, before it was random and would often resolve spontaneously on reboot.
However, the whole formatting issue only started after 'repairing' Office (several times offline, once online which seemed to completely reinstall Office, not just repair) and I lost a lot of my settings which I was not warned of, and gained these problems :-(
I am still really hoping there is a Word expert that will come along and resolve the issue or at least tell me they do not have a clue if they have looked and that is the case :-)

Is there nobody that can help me with this? Anyone know where else I can try? This really is not a good issue to have with Word.
I wish we could help, but as long as it's intermittent and not document-related, there's really not much anyone can do.
It is no longer intermittent it has been permanent since the online 'repair' (should say reinstall). When you say not document-related, what does that mean?
I was hoping someone could explain why the reveal formatting appears so differently.
