I use several templates that have bold, italic, and underlined headers/paragraph headings. Every now and again when I open these templates (and any document based on them) none of the formatting is displayed on my PC screen ie the whole document looks like it is typed in plain times roman 12 with no bold, italic, underline anywhere.
I have opened word 2016 in safe mode and the same thing is occurring.
I have printed a page that I know should have the formatting and it is printing plain too.
I have not touched the formatting in any way.
I have found that, randomly, rebooting will solve the issue and the bold etc displays and prints. However, for the last couple of days this is not working.
Also, when viewed on a PC I send the completed docs to, all the correct formatting is displayed?!
Any ideas?

Just to add, this is the 'reveal formatting' information. It says bold and italic but the text on the screen is plain.

As I replied to your email, somehow TNR Bold had been applied as direct formatting. On my end, selecting text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar to remove the direct formatting, then reapplying the bold formatting, corrected the problem in the Reveal Formatting task pane.
I wish I knew??! In any event, whether the default is bold or bold is applied neither is displaying as such, the text is displaying as regular.
Also, if I highlight text that is meant to be bold/italic (but is displayed as regular) then the RF displays as the images I have supplied AND on the home bar the font is TNR and the 'B' and 'I' icons are not greyed. I would have thought that if RF shows that the text is bold and italic (whether by default or applied) then it would be reflected on the home bar AND on the screen, but neither is showing.
It is very frustrating.
ps another small issue started today - if I copy and paste something into a doc word inserts spaces before and after, for example I want to add blahblah to just before the last bracket of (blahblah/) so I copy, and cut blahblah and paste it to (blahblah/) (the blahblah I copy, cut, and paste has no spaces but when I paste it looks like this (blahblah/ blahblah ) I then have to go back and delete the spaces so it is as should be (blahblah/blahbblah) ?? :-)
Here is another screenshot to show the whole frustrating thing: Note I have the word 'address' selected. This is meant to be TNR BOLD. The 'star' that follows address is TNR which is correct. Note items circled in pink - the selected word 'address' is NOT DISPLAYING as TNR (looks like Arial) it is not bold it is regular. The reveal formatting says TNR Bold, which it should be. The home bar displays TNR 12 regular, the bold icon is not greyed out and is therefore not reflecting the settings in reveal formatting. The default font is TNR 12pt regular. The word 'Ref' (which is in the header) is displaying as regular TNR but, as described previously, it should be TNR bold and italic!??? Suzanne has been very helpful in trying to help me out here but, please, are there any other experts that would take a look? This is a problem with WORD and I really need to rectify it. Thank you.
The latter issue is caused by "smart cut and paste." At File | Options | Advanced: Cut, copy, and paste, you can click the Settings... button by "Use smart cut and paste" to enable/disable specific options. Another annoyance that I always disable is "When selecting automatically select entire word" at File | Options | Advanced: Editing options.
I would suspect a problem with the font itself except that apparently you're having this problem only with specific documents. Try resetting the default font to "+Body" and see if that has any effect.
In this discussion, I have discovered that for some reason TNR is selected on the Set Defaults tab of Manage Styles in my copy of Word 2013 (which I don't use except for reference), yet the font of the Normal style is set (as expected) to Calibri (Body), which should be the default. A conflict here is not desirable.
