I use several templates that have bold, italic, and underlined headers/paragraph headings. Every now and again when I open these templates (and any document based on them) none of the formatting is displayed on my PC screen ie the whole document looks like it is typed in plain times roman 12 with no bold, italic, underline anywhere.
I have opened word 2016 in safe mode and the same thing is occurring.
I have printed a page that I know should have the formatting and it is printing plain too.
I have not touched the formatting in any way.
I have found that, randomly, rebooting will solve the issue and the bold etc displays and prints. However, for the last couple of days this is not working.
Also, when viewed on a PC I send the completed docs to, all the correct formatting is displayed?!
Any ideas?

Just to add, this is the 'reveal formatting' information. It says bold and italic but the text on the screen is plain.

As I replied to your email, somehow TNR Bold had been applied as direct formatting. On my end, selecting text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar to remove the direct formatting, then reapplying the bold formatting, corrected the problem in the Reveal Formatting task pane.

Yes it really is strange! The documents are definitely not in outline view, always in print view. What is strange is that a) bold and italic is shown in reveal formatting but not on the screen/print, b) totally randomly it will look fine and c) it is always fine when viewed on the PC I send the finished document to.
I just hate not seeing the document on screen how it is meant to look and spending hours trying to sort it out with no joy :-( There must be a reason for it.

Todays Word joy. The text is formatted to be times new roman 12, bold, and italic. It states this in the 'reveal formatting.' It has not been changed in any way. Today, on my screen it is displaying like this (see the word 'field' at the top of reveal formatting, I do not even know what that font is called:
I have tried changing default printer settings. I have tried opening word in safe mode. I have rebooted so many times I have forgotten. I have updated the printer driver, twice. I have viewed the documents in all scenarios outline, print etc - I always use print view as standard.
There must be someone much cleverer than me when it comes to Word that can work out what is going on before I lose my mind!?
I have noticed a 'subtle' difference in the reveal formatting (RF) where formatted text that is showing as plain on my screen, see image below. I opened a document where all headings are formatted to be bold and underlined but today, on my screen, some are viewing correctly ie are bold and underlined (first image shows RF for these) and some are not ie not bold, some underlined, some not (second image for RF). Under the 'font' section in RF the wording is slightly different (ie in image 2 'bold' is tabbed across), anyone know if this means anything, why it is different/how did it 'get different', how to fix etc? Please note I am not permitted to change the formatting on the templates and, as I have said before, they do sometimes display completely as they are meant to on my screen (and on the screens of those the final docs are sent to). I just want them to consistently look as they are meant to when opened and viewed on my screen.
In the Reveal Formatting pane, check the box for "Distinguish style source." It might be helpful to know which properties (if any) are direct formatting. But I've done some experiments in a document here, and I can't get the result you're showing on the right, which is showing that the default font is the bold variant of TNR. On the left, TNR (normal) is the default font, with Bold applied either by the style or as direct formatting. I suspect that if you go to the Set Defaults tab of the Manage Styles dialog, you'll find that TNR Bold is selected as the default font. If the style includes bold formatting, that might actually turn off the bold property, but this is too complex for me as a thought exercise!
