I use several templates that have bold, italic, and underlined headers/paragraph headings. Every now and again when I open these templates (and any document based on them) none of the formatting is displayed on my PC screen ie the whole document looks like it is typed in plain times roman 12 with no bold, italic, underline anywhere.
I have opened word 2016 in safe mode and the same thing is occurring.
I have printed a page that I know should have the formatting and it is printing plain too.
I have not touched the formatting in any way.
I have found that, randomly, rebooting will solve the issue and the bold etc displays and prints. However, for the last couple of days this is not working.
Also, when viewed on a PC I send the completed docs to, all the correct formatting is displayed?!
Any ideas?

Just to add, this is the 'reveal formatting' information. It says bold and italic but the text on the screen is plain.

As I replied to your email, somehow TNR Bold had been applied as direct formatting. On my end, selecting text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar to remove the direct formatting, then reapplying the bold formatting, corrected the problem in the Reveal Formatting task pane.
Did you look at the Set Defaults tab of Manage Styles to see what font was selected as the default? I think that may be the key. If the bold variant is actually set as the default, it might affect the ability of Word to apply bold and italic properties. The normal thing is for the "regular" variant of the font to be set as the default. When you apply the bold or italic or bold and italic properties, Word then substitutes TNR Bold, TNR Italic, or TNR Bold Italic. (I'm not sure why this would affect underline, though.) But if that's the cause of the problem, it would affect printing as well. When you take the file to a different computer where the specific template is not present (or is different) then the local Normal template (or the different document template) would be attached, which might result in the document displaying normally.

Updated all drivers and acceleration is disabled.....no difference I am afraid :-(
I think it must be to do with something relating to the specific template/s as it is not a global issue ie other templates are displaying bold/italic/underline just as they should be.
I really would like to know why the reveal formatting information is displaying like it is in the examples I gave, if someone knew this it may be the answer as there is a clear difference to how the wording in RF looks when the text is displayed as it should and when it is displayed as it should not.
Okay. Since it seems to be perhaps a video issue, you might explore along that line. Update the video driver? Disable hardware graphics acceleration?
I appreciate the offer :-) It probably will not be a good idea as the documents always look okay when viewed on another PC (ie when I send them out they look as they are meant to, seems to be just a problem on my screen). So, so frustrating.
